Officially diagnosed LADA

I finally got the call from my dr today. My GAD65 test came back positive. After being treated for gestational diabetes during 3 pregnancies and t2 for the last 6 1/2 years I finally have a correct diagnosis! I’m starting on basal insulin tomorrow. I have mixed emotions… happy to know but also not excited about injecting insulin for the rest of my life and having to watch for hypos.

welcome to the tud, & the club, i love it here, everyone here is so nice, helpful, i can go on & on,.

hope u like, it as much as i do,.

Insulin really isn’t that bad… There are some outstanding next-generation insulins hitting the market, and in my opinion a lot of the horror stories and downsides are leftovers from the previous generation, which basically ended about 20 years ago with the advent of modern analogs and widespread accurate home bg testing… It’s a better time than ever before to be using insulin, that’s for sure.

Just out of curiousity, what was the level of your gad65 positive?

i’m on a pump, so to me Insulin is easy, to easy now,.

3.7

I’ve been really curious what levels other people have had.

Mine was 3.6 when first diagnosed.

I haven’t seen any meaningful interpretation of what the level actually means, for example is a 3.6 any different from 53.6 for practical purposes? Or is a positive = a positive? I can’t seem to get a strait answer even from endocrinologists. I do have a referral to have mine retested now, years later.

Curious how long ago you were diagnosed? Were you misdiagnosed as t2 to start with?

my, was 4.0, when i was first diagnosed,.

4 years ago. The primary care doctor told me I had type 2 diabetes initially, then after my labs came back and he consulted with the CDE id seen that day he called me back the very next day and brought me in to start me on insulin. That was before my gad65 was even tested.

I had lost about 30 lbs (on a skinny guy) and had an a1c over 11 though, with a fasting blood sugar of 400— my c-peptide came back low and they figured out I needed insulin pretty quick.

My GAD65 was 7.7

Mine was “>250”.
Yikes!

Sorry to hear that you have diabetes but at least you have gotten a specific diagnosis and can get appropriate treatment. My understanding is the actual level of antibodies doesn’t really mean anything, it is just whether you have them or not.

Welcome!

Taking insulin saved my life, so I’m not grumpy about the insulin. My pancreas, though… :slightly_smiling: Things might seem overwhelming, but remember that millions of us have made the adjustment, and you will too. There are good people here, with good advice.
