OmniPod insertion

Hi there!

I’ve been on the omnipod for 3-4weeks. I’ve inserted the cannula incorrectly twice. I’m assuming I wasn’t pushing down/pinching up enough. Do other omnipod pumpers find that key to getting the cannula in right?

It works well for me. I pinch up enough to bring enough “fatty” tissue to the pod and give some room from my muscle. I push down just enough to just make the pod level against the tissue. So the top with the window is not higher or lower than the thicker bottom side. I dont know if that makes much since but I haven’t had too many problems. When you inserted incorrectly what happened?

I was showing my aunt so I guess I wasn’t paying very close attention. I pinched up, but not much and didn’t push down where it inserts. After smelling insulin and my bs’s raising and raising I finally redid it in my arm and no problems.

So the cannula wasn’t in the tissue or bent? Did you call omnipod it could have been a defective pod. I had several bad pods over the summer and they replaced most of them for free.

When I took it out it was straight and I didn’t see a mark on my skin from a needlestick so I guess it just didn’t make it. I didn’t think to call them! I’m more upset about the wasted insulin than the bad pod! haha. is there a way to get the insulin out and move it to the new pod?

Ya you can try to draw the insulin back out of the pod. I’ve only gotten it out once in the past. You would have to play with it and see if you can figure it out. The one I was successful with I had the pod with the flat side down and drew out the insulin from the port that way. Kind of looking up at the pod. haha I dont know if that makes sense, but like I said I haven’t had much success drawing the insulin back out. Definitly call them, and if you still have the pod you could still call them now. They just need the info from the pod and what happened, and they will help you trouble shoot and/or send a new pod for free.

The two times I tried the “pinch” method, I got bleeders with Caleb, but I know this approach works well for many people. I use the “push” in method, as we were trained and it’s always been ok. I’m doing it one handed here at about 4:40: http://www.tudiabetes.org/video/pod-change-omnipod

Or here at about 2:30

My son’s first pod was a total sucess and left no mark. The second went into a painful spot so we took it out. The third we put on using the pinch up method push down on window. He has a red circle there now even though that one was taken off almost 3 days ago. Not infected just maybe like a bruise?

Not sure how you can pinch up and push down when you need to keep the PDM within a couple of inches. I mostly use the back of my arms. Can’t there from here. haha Only my other arm can hold the PDM so I let it rip. Don’t seem to have many problems. I can only get 2 to 2 1/2 days days from any site I use.

It’s actually easy to pinch up a little with fingers on both sides of the pod and one finger pushing down. Do it all the time and it works great. Since you are using only one hand on the pod, the other is free to hold the pdm.

I use 2 hands to pinch up and push down. I stand during the procedure and have the PDM resting on a dresser which has the right height.

Thanks for asking this question Samantha, I was wondering as well… I just got word form Insulet that my insurance approved the Omnipod and they’re shipping tomorrow!! I’m excited, after 20 years of MDI…

I’ve been on Novolog pens and have a bunch left over; has anyone successfully “sucked out” the insulin from a pen and put it into the Omnipod? Or even shot directly into the pods from a pen? That would be great since I have so many Novolog pens I would hate to waste them.

Also, does anyone know if there’s a difference between using Humalog and Novolog with the Omnipod? Thanks!

Never had a problem, most of the time I would pinch up, sometimes not but I would always lightly push down on it as it inserted.
