If you find that you don’t have antibodies then you might want to look at Ketosis Prone Type 2 diabetes. It is a very common though little known type of diabetes, especially in the islands. There is a forum here on it. There is also a blog on it.http://ketosisprone.blogspot.com/
I was diagnosed June 2nd as type 2. And I am still pretty overwhelmed. I have three life lines though:
One is Gretchen Becker’s book Type 2 Diabetes The First Year. I read that for about 15 minutes every morning.
Another is Diabetes for Dummies by Dr. Alan Rubin. I use it as a reference when something from the other book or from the internet or where ever raises a question in my mind.
And third is this tudiabetes website, which I hang on to tightly with both hands till my knuckles turn white.
Hello Everyone
I was just placed on Victoza, similar to Byetta.
I had been on Metformin 1500 mg per day for about 3 yrs along with blood pressure medicine and at times high volumes of advil for headaches, aches and pains, to aide in sleeping, basically any type of pain. Unfortunately, this combination along with type 2 diabetes damaged my kidneys. I now have Cronic Kidney Disease stage 3. I was really thrown when discovered I had CKD. My doctor changed my blood pressure medicine and sugar pill to glimepiride. The glimepiride didn’t control my sugar levels like Metformin. After a lengthly discussion with my doctor today he suggested Victoza.
I’m putting a lot of hope and faith into this medication. If any one out there is using Victoza and can share experiences I’d appreciate it.
Di.
I’ve been on Victoza for about three weeks after having been on Byetta for two years. There is a group here on Victoza (http://www.tudiabetes.org/group/victoza). Your question can probably be better answered there.
Thank you for helping! I supose you can always tell a newbie to the site
Thank you everyone for the advice and encouragement. I think i’m accepting my diabetes now. Progress is slow, but I’m getting there. I went to the endo yesterday, and my my a1c level dopped from 11% to 6.5%, so i’m happy! And my antibodies test shows that I am a type 2. After researching it, I now know it can happen. In fact diabetes is so common in the family. My great grandmother had it, grandmother, grandfather, father, and uncle. This website is great, and I’ve learned so much and feel much better than when I was first diagnosed!
I’m so glad you found us. :)))) So glad you finally know your type.
Thank you so much!
I’ll definately get the book and i’ll look into the diet
Hi D,
Welcome to the community! Feel free to start a discussion on any topic you like. There’s a search feature on the top of every page to search past discussions.
I noticed you listed 230 as your fasting. If Victoza doesn’t bring BG into range, please discuss insulin with your endo. More T2s use insulin now when oral meds don’t work or cause problems.
It took me awhile. I was dx at 48…and I waited 2 years before getting my stuff together about it. I took the meds, and “played” at taking care of myself, but I really didn’t.
It is a tough thing to handle, don’t be dissing yourself about the ability to just jump in an take charge. We all handle the dx part and acceptance part in our own way.
Congrats on the 10 lb loss, that’s so good for you on so many levels, and to do it eating school food is amazing. You are doing well there. If you are exercising with your schedule, even another plus on your side. Taking your meds religiously, three points for you!!! Now the emotional side of handling diabetes. Just remember that you didn’t give yourself this disease, there are so many unknowns and so many things that can contribute to who gets diabetes…some we may never know the why…just that it is.
No one walks into their doc’s office and says, I think I’d like to have diabetes today, like you might a flu shot. And as Frances said, it’s not a club that you want to join, but, you are now a member, and doing well. We are here, we are ready to help with whatever you need, and even if it’s just a shoulder…we are here. My stable question is have you seen a Diabetes Educator (CDE)? and or nutritionist? They will be able to help you make sense out of things that are asked of you by your doc.
Stick with us, like I said, we are here for ya…and congrats on already doing so many good things for yourself.
Thanks Geri,
I used the first dose of Victoza this morning @ 5;30am. When I got to work @ 9am I took a reading (first for the day) and it was 145. Hasn’t been that low in ages…Will hope for the best and keep you posted. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for the advice and kind words! I have seen a nutritionist, who was very helpful for me in terms of carb counting and planning meals. It’s hard, but I know i’ll “get it” soon enough.
Hi Lea… !
I got dx’d when I was 28 and like you, I was eating the same amount of food but I dropped 40 lbs within a year without doing anything different. I was tired all the time as well. Now even after 3 years, I still go thru a ‘why me’ days. I’ve tried a lot of medicine (both oral and shots) and my bs is still unstable. Recently I started on victoza, a once a day injection and seriously started a 15-20 mins. walk on my elliptical every night. it helped my morning fasting sugar (they were always around 160s) and now it’s in the 110-120s. Good luck!
You don’t test your blood sugar daily? Counting on the A1C as the only measurement of how you are doing seems way laissez-faire.
