I recently decided to take back over my life and my diabetes. I always wanted to go into the Airforce as an officer after I finished college, but of course found out being an insulin dependant diabetic that it’s not allowed. So there goes my first dream. Now I have start training because within the next year I want to go into the police academy and eventually the FBI. My question is does the police force hold the same rules as the military? If they do I don’t want to waste my hopes and dreams. Can I still be a police officer even though I’m diabetic?
I would think every department would have different policies. I have seen on dLife TV a woman police officer. They did a segment on her. So it is possible.
You can be a police officer we have a couple in the city I work ems for they are both on pumps. it just depends on where you want to work at and what guidelines that department has
I see no reason why you can’t. A quick look did not find anything about VA police. In general, the Americans with Disabilities Act protects you from being unfairly excluded from a job. As long as you properly control you diabetes there is no reason you can’t be a police officer. And just so you know, there are diabetics who have fought for theior rightful place at the FBI as well (http://forecast.diabetes.org/magazine/your-ada/diabetes-discrimination-fbi). Don’t you dare give up on your dreams. You may go through life and have people tell you that you can’t do things, but you need to believe in yourself and what is right.
I’ll be cheering for you and hopefully someday when you pull me over for speeding you will look at me an show some leniency.
ps. I’m pretty sure I hardly ever speed.
lol thanks everyone. I really hope one day soon our government makes this exception for the military too :(.
The military is NO for sure.
As for being a Police officer. Yes you can. You have to pass a medical evaluation. So make sure your numbers and control are OK for the doctor to sign off on. If you have had any past medical related problems (low blood sugar) they could say no.
