Protein

I was told by 2 different doctors (speaking in general terms, not specific to me) that diabetics shouldn’t eat an enormous amount of protein since our kidneys are already somewhat weakened. Like he said don’t have protein shakes, don’t eat an entire chicken, don’t have like 5 hamburgers in one sitting, don’t have like 3 cans of tuna fish as a snack for examples. We have to limit carbs and now we kind of have to limit protein, D’Oh

How much is too much? I have a hearty appetite but even I couldn’t demolish an entire chicken in one sitting…

And don’t forget ‘limit fats’ which is the standard medical advice. (Completely devoid of evidence as far as I can see.)

Also quite a few PWD have gastroparesis and with that, fibre is a problem as well.

Plus metabolic syndrome/T2 often comes bundled with hypertension so you gotta watch the sodium intake as well.

Shall I get started on cholesterol? Hahahaha.

Our best bet, is lettuce and water :stuck_out_tongue:

My cholesterol is the best it’s ever been since I started limiting carbs. And eating more protein than I used to. Dr. Bernstein says that protein does NOT damage healthy kidneys, and just because you’re diabetic does NOT mean you have damaged kidneys.

Just remember there is more that medical science does NOT know than what they DO.

OMG, you were diagnosed in last April and your kidneys are already failing? You must have walked around for years with elevated blood sugars before being diagnosed. So yes, there is some evidence (from the Nurses Health Study) that if you have kidney failure you should not eat a high protein diet because it can accelerate the failure of your kidneys. There isn’t any evidence that protein is a problem for people with normal kidney function. I use protein shakes all the time and have at times tried to get 200-300 g of protein a day. I’m sorry to hear about your kidney problems.

No one should eat an entire chicken, 5 hamburgers or 3 cans of tuna in 1 sitting. Ever

A lot of us use protein shakes. I am not currently but I did in the past and plan to use them again. I was actually told to do that by a doctor. I am actually trying to add protein to my diet. Like the others said, protein is not good if you have kidney problems, but if your kidneys are fine, it is not a problem.

Ditto the recommendations of others. It’s typically recommended for individuals with established chronic kidney disease. And even in those patients, the evidence for low protein diets is mostly from experimental animal models. The data in humans is less clear-cut. Most doctors recommend it based on the evidence that is out there, but it’s not without debate.

I don’t have kidney problems, I was just surprised 2 different doctors said not to eat enormous amounts of protein and specifically mentioned protein shakes. I did have some protein in my urine but I am on 2.5mg of ramipril and it has come down.

Did you by chance exercise within 48 hrs before the urine test? I did and blew protein. I had “Kidneys Failing” marked in red on my chart. I stopped exercising before test and have not had a problem since. A “real” kidney problem will show up as a reduction in your GFR.
