Pushing 1 unit out prior to your dose--insulin pen

Are you supposed to “click” 1unit out of your insulin pen prior to giving yourself your dose?? I have heard yes and no. Wanted input from you all please!!

Actually the directions that come with the pens all say to “prime” or “air shoot” out 2 units before injecting (all of them that I’ve bothered to read anyway) I find two to be wasteful generally-- i prime one unit and as long as I see a drop come out of the needle I consider it good enough

With a brand new pen it is really important to click away until u see it actually shooting some insulin before you use it.

@JCVillafranca, Imho and experience, it is a good idea to prime your pen till a full insulin drop comes out without any air bubbles since it helps avoid incorrect dosage.

i also do 2 unit prime.

Thanks!!

Yes, I do 1-2 units to make sure insulin comes out the end before using. Especially with a new pen (which may require more than a few units), as @Sam19 says.

When she used pens, we always did a 2-unit prime with each and every dose.

Always prime my pens. Nancy

Ten years on MDI with pens and I never heard of doing this. Can I have a do-over?

@DrBB that explains why you ended up on a pump…

I actually prime the pen until I see the insulin squirt.

I knew there had to be a reason. Too dumb for MDI!
