Can you imagine trying to control blood sugar with Regular insulin, only? It appears that before 1936 there were no long or intermediate acting insulins.
I would imagine that when there was only regular insulin (animal based, but “regular”) diabetes became a manageable chronic sickness, rather than a treatable chronic condition.
My words above were chosen carefully. I expect that someone who only had R to treat with would be a lot “sicker” (i.e. feeling bad, complications, etc.) than those who came after the NPH formulation became available.
There were no glucometers then either, so “feeling bad” was a more regularly used metric for driving treatment. Also, I doubt they understood IC ratios in those days as well.
Barbaric. It distresses me greatly to hear of conditions toward that kind of situation in other countries.
