Schizophrenia/mental illness, medications and BGs

I will have to wait until my contract ends at the end of November before I will qualify. our incomes are too high at this point.

don’t you just hate that. contracts…imprisonment.

not at first because that is how I’m earning money.
I just have a feeling once I stop working, the only thing I will miss is the money.
we’ll be able to get other government assistance.
I used to be so against doing things like that, but it seems like you are rewarded better if you do things like that. Plus I’ll be able to raise my baby daughter and take care of her full time.
if my fiancee and I didn’t have health issues, I would just say screw it and just buy into a crap and cheap ACA policy or just get schip for the baby and just pay the tax penality for my fiancee and I. We have health issues now and we just can’t get buy on a health insurance policy that isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

i do not condone this, but i will put it out there: i am aware of couples who have actually gotten divorced so that their home income is not based on their total income. separately, they each qualify for extra help programs, including but not limited to medicaid. have you considered not getting married?

i know the idea of becoming a full time child care-taker is a wonderful opportunity, but what other choices do you have? are there any other considerations for you and your growing family?

just an idea.

another idea, despite not really knowing your financial circumstances: have you and your fiancee discussed YOU keeping your job and HER leaving her job? then maybe you will both qualify for public assistance?

with only my income it will be one of the cases where I literally earn $50 too much and we wouldn’t qualify for anything.
It doesn’t matter if we are married or not because in this state they count income of all household members.

well that really sucks. and by such a margin of $50 OMG!!! what state do you live in, if you don’t mind my asking? a Nazi Regime?

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1994. then bipolar disorder 1 in 2005. right now i am on lithium, lamictal, risperdal, klonopin, amantidine, and lexapro. i pump over 60 units in just basal rates alone. i weigh 230 lbs. Five years ago i was on only 3 meds and was pumping 38 units TOTAL all day and weighed 155 lbs. I take metformin for insulin resistance but I really don’t think it’s doing anything. How can I scale back my weight taking all of these blasted pills? I eat low carb when I can but the six meds leaves me hungry sometimes. My diet is actually not even my concern. My sugars run 180 - 220 fasting.

Florida is the same way.

I am not a doctor so i can’t give you an answer that is medically sound, but, as a person living w/ D as well as psychiatric illnesses i can empathize w/out equivocation. i am dx as a paranoid schizophrenic with obsessive compulsive disorder and bi-polar disorder. i take a very strong antipsychotic medication called Clozoril (also known as Clozopine); it is specific for schizophrenia and it helps tremendously. i also take Brintellix, Lamictal, Klonopin, and a slew of other meds for other health related problems.

i have been on most of the meds that you are on, and i must say that they do cause weight gain and increased appetite. it sucks when you’re dealing w/ trying to keep your sugars down…not only because of all the food you want to eat, but b/c anti-psychotics raise blood sugars on their own.(even if you were not over-weight, even if you were super skinny, the meds would STILL raise your BGs)
(i know, b/c i am very skinny, and have gone for years trying to manage high BGs)

i can say that different anti-pyschotics have different side-effects and that there is not one ā€œrightā€ one for any of us. i had to go inpatient for 2 years to have all my medications and my insulin needs met properly. doctors tried different combinations of different meds on me trying to come up with a cocktail that worked as best it could with the least amount of side-effects. everything was a compromise.

i’m sorry that you are suffering, and i am sorry that i cannot provide an answer for you, but i can tell you that you are most certainly NOT alone. and, there are others besides myself who are grateful to know of your story (so that they, too, don’t feel alone). all my compassion to you, and i hope that you continue ahead w/ all of your courage to find the right ā€œcocktailā€ that will work best for you.

please be in touch,
Daisy Mae

I am sorry you suffer from so much. It definitely takes a lot of work to manage of all this. do you use an insulin pump? my endo will not even consider letting me do MDI. my last a1c was 8.0 on a pump, so the pump isn’t going anywhere. I’m only 28 and have social issues wearing the pump. Some people say mean or rude things sometimes. I guess they really don’t know what boat I am in.

i would rather have both of my feet and my eye site and tolerate the school bullies.

yes, i wear an insulin pump. i have worn one for almost 15 years now. it completely changed my life for the better. before the pump i was taking shots all day long, doing finger sticks every 2 hours. i was on 3 different types of insulin (NPH, R, Lente) and nothing seemed to work well. i have had the same endo for years and years now, and we tried everything in the book we could think of to get me stabilized but the anti-psychotics interfered with everything. the pump changed all that. i highly recommend it.

i also recommend getting a CGM (a continuous glucose monitor) which will help you immensely w/ regard to seeing trends in your BGs (ups, downs, exercise, sleep, whatever happens during regular behaviors, etc)

best of luck. remember, it is always a good thing to ask questions. there are never any stupid questions; and there is always a lot of excellent support here on TuD.

I’ve been pumping since 2001 when I was 14. I’ve tried doing MDI a few times but never did it for longer than a week. I’m 28 now and it seems like some people have a problem with my pump. But like you said you have to do what’s best for your health.

I am almost done getting the Abilify out of my system and my bg’s are showing it by coming down quite nicely. I’m at a good dose with the Lamictal and it’s going well. I haven’t had any weird side effects. whew… I’m excited about getting off the Abilify finally. It should be out of my system withing the month. yeah!!!

Cocheze, to begin with you are being WAY over medicated for Bipolar 1. I was diagnosed in 1996 with Bipolar 1 ans was initially on Depakote and Wellbutrin. I went from 150 up to 280 lbs in under a year. I managed to get back down to 185 AFTER stopping the Depakote and today I am at around 236, bUt I blame that on the Insulin, Diagnosed T1D in 2009 4 days before my mother died. I have been on just Wellbutrin XL 300mg once a day and I am doing GREAT. I have been a nurse for 30 Years and all I ever did was pass medications so I know quite a few things about the meds you are taking and It concerns me that you are taking so many…Lithium alone can cause allot of problems, it was part of the cause of my mothers death, she was allergic to it and had to be placed on Dialysis once because her level was WELL over 7.0. That was the first time…the second time we didn’t know she was on lithium until I visited her in the Nursing home she was in for rehab. She was getting sick and I asked to see her medication regimen and sure enough (even though there was a RED card with her drug allergies listed) they were giving her LITHIUM…and that basically was the beginning of the end. She also had SEVERE T2D being so overweight. Sorry for my rambling but when I see someone who has Bipolar 1 like we have, and I see they are on basically every medication known treat it, I get worried and HAVE to Speak up…I would HIGHLY suggest you speak to your Psychiatrist about your regimen and the possibility of maybe weening you off some of those meds. Remember too, that it can take up to 2 weeks for these meds to get into your system and build up a level, and it takes just as long for them to work out of your system…

weaver3, I do believe I am being babied by being saturated with so many dang pills. Lithium, lamictal, risperdal, klonopin, amantidine, and lexapro! which ones concern you the most? i’m 235 lbs now and want to get to 180. The only thing that really helps is exercising. I try to do low carb but it’s hard with diabetes and hypos and what not. My psychiatrist said the risperdal and lexapro were the culprits, the 2 drugs that seem to help the most!

Daisy, here is my advice as have been dealing with BP1D and GAD for years. you need to make sure both doctors are on the same page. there are drugs that will push your blood sugar up. I take about 17 different medications for 6 medical conditions including D. It becomes a balancing act. Dr. A wants to perscribe something Dr. B is against because it will mess with your blood sugar. Also if your insurance provides it (most medicaid plans do) you can have a third party review your meds which is sometimes helpful to have a neutral third party. I also find myself reading up on drugs before i get the script filled. Again this is just from my view.

Hi I’m new to TuDiabetes. I’m a 35 year old female. I had depression from an early age and was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 28 (with my first manic/psychotic episode). A little over a year later I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (while I was on Abilify). I also am a recovering bulimic (a 16 year struggle, been in recovery for a year and half). I have been on disability since shortly after my diagnosis (schizoaffective) 7 years now but have been pretty stable mentally for 2 years. I work as a volunteer at an animal protective league and will be pursuing a career in pet grooming. Balancing a mental illness, diabetes and eating disorder is very challenging but I am happy I found support. I look forward to making some great friends!
