Sleep pills/aids and diabetes?

So I’m a college student and have found since moving to a new area and starting another heavy school load (I’m a junior) that I am not sleeping through the night. I can nap during the day and I’ve tried not napping, it doesn’t work. I didn’t nap at all yesterday and I was tired and got off my shift and went to go to bed at 12:30 and woke up at 4:45 and couldn’t fall back asleep no matter how much I wanted to. I don’t feel like I’m getting adequate sleep. Now it’s 11am the next day and I’m tired and want to nap.

I tried taking the Walmart brand version of unisom sleep pills, equate nighttime sleep aid. The main ingredient was diphenhydramine HCI 50mg. Oh my gosh I felt like I was low blood sugar for 12+ hours. Shaky, weird feeling, fast pulse, more tired, and just off. I won’t ever take those again.

I bought, trying to find another solution, Nature Made SLEEP natural sleep aid. 100% drug free. However I just noticed the back of the box says “Don’t use if you have an automimmune condition, depressive or endocrine disorder…” I’m assuming this has to do with the melatonin 2.5mg.

Any suggestions. Tea and stuff like that dont work for me, I still wake up throughout the night…

Hoping to find some sleep aid, preferably natural, to help me sleep through the night or some home remedies. Unless you have a tea that you know will work and it strong. I’m desperate!!

Thanks!

I was going to suggest Walgreens Wal-Dryl Allergy, which is the generic of Benedryl, but it also has diphenhydramine HCI, but 25mg. But it doesn’t sound like it would work for you. It helps me get to sleep and sleep all night.

Do you drink alcohol? It disrupts sleep. Also do you drink anything with caffeine? I can’t drink caffeine past morning or I can’t get to sleep. Also some people find relief with Ambien, but it’s a prescription med and you might not want to go that route.

no, I don’t drink alcohol at all. I drink a lot of milk, water, propel zero, and sprite zero, but that’s about the most of what I drink especially before bed.

I am afraid to try any other non natural stuff because of what happened the first time. I felt so off I couldnt even think straight. I felt like I had a very weird fever…

Has anone taken the natural sleep pills I listed? I know that it says not to if you have an autoimmune but if someone has tried them and had to adverse effects I would be willing to try them.

I have taken melatonin before and it had no effect on me; BG or tiredness. I don’t know if your body will react the same as mine, but you might be able to give that a try.

College was a tough time for me to get in a pattern. The best way I have found to get in a sleep patern is to fight through the tiredness and stay awake till bedtime for a few days and wake up at the same time. After a few days your body will be exhausted and you will pass out once you lay down for bed. Also, if you can get on a sleep pattern, you may want to consider waking up close to the same time every day (not sleeping in on weekends).

I have taken Melatonin without any sort of issue as far as the D goes. All of the over the counter options, including melatonin, make me feel like you described.

I have also taken Ambien which, so long as I got 7 hours of sleep, gave me absolutely no side effects the next day. If I happen to go to bed late and need to wake up early I would not be able to take it because it made me feel really tired the next day.

Hope you get some good sleep soon some way or another

I have a question about sleeping aids:

I’ve never dared taking any no matter how tired but unable to sleep I was.
The main reason is that I am afraid that I won’t wake up from low blood sugars!

I don’t want to bring myself in danger of dying just so that I can sleep. It might be the last time I sleep in…
Unfortunately, it happens too often that my bs is lower than it should be in the morning.
Last week, I woke up at 5:30 with a 41 - what if I had taken sleeping aids?

Does anybody know? Do sleeping aids/pills of any kind affect the body’s ability to wake you up in case your bs is low?

I am a college student also and what I have found works for me the best is the Tylenol PM. I have no idea why it works good but its the only medicine that i have tried that actually helps me sleep. The only down side is that its a bit harder to get up in the morning but once I am up I feel fine. Also try throwing in a exercise time for some reason that worked for me also.

i would always suggest a nice good vaporizing of some nice sticky buds do the trick when i want to get some extra sleep, i get soo wound up and with my restaurant and get out soo late and back up at six to get kids to school and back to the restaurant, not only does it do wonde.rs for the pain i incur during the day from running around for 12 hours on tile and periphal neuropathy but i can close my eyes and get a much needed nap, or sleep for the night…

and its all natural now the arguement that people have is with SMOKED herbs, vaporizing is a much healthier alternative because it doesn’t burn @ 600 degrees like fire only hot enough to get the thc to vaporize and enter the lungs, it is a night and day difffernce to the point of where i can actually breath and play sports without coughing and gagging like a ciggaerrte fiend.

I come from a family of non sleepers. Three of us take Ambien, but I am the only diabetic and I still can wake up when I go low. My mother takes Tylenol PM. We have all tried natural stuff with no luck. Ambien works best for us.

Valerian root tea will make me pretty sleepy. It’s an ingredient in “Sleepytime Extra”, along with chamomille and some other soothing, herby stuff.

Lows don’t wake me up anyways so not much of a risk for me. I would imagine that you would still wake up. Medication like Ambien get through the system fairly quick. That is why for people who have trouble with staying to sleep there is a controlled release formula of Ambien that will keep the med in your system longer. Long story short, unless the low happened right after you went to bed I wouldn’t think it would effect your ability to wake up from a low. Of course the meds effect everyone different so as always YMMV.

Only problem is…Unless you have a medical MJ card it is illegal. Even if you do have a medical card you are still technically violating fedral law. Not that I necessarily agree with the laws but you are still at risk by using this “remedy”.

There is a prescription drug called zopiclone or immovane get 7.5 mg and you can try taking only 1/2 pill. It also works to fall back asleep at 4 am. Not particul;arily additive and does permit you to function the next day.

yes there is risk involved from that pov but i also weigh that risk to the dependency issues of these pill form sleep aids and have even seen the news stories that lead to them listing side effects of sleep driving etc. suicide depression.etc.etc…

so while the legal arguement is always a valid counter to medical mary jane, there are quite a bit more serious side effects to pill formed medication be it as weak as tylenol or heavy as a the crap micheal jackson was taking,…

anyone list the side effects of mary jane vs. propfol…lol…if only micheal would have made a puff puff give song…

HI danielle, just wondering do you exercise or do yoga, two great natural sleep aids. a good walk to get out the cobwebs and some quite yoga are great for sleep. one pose that is especially helpful is legs up the wall ( once i was teaching an older adult man and he used to do this in the middle of the night when he couldn’t sleep once his wife almost tripped over him!) along with gentle foward bends i ill foward a link to yoga journal. your mind is probably so busy with all your work with school that you are having trouble shutting down just remember behind all the mind chatter and thoughts in your mind there is a quite nothing that is you that is always at peace, sounds all new age but really so true try taking a few really deep breaths right now and see if you feel that connection to your spirit and the sense that all will be well.
http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/690 ( the best, do this last)
http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/480 ( only if you do not have neck problems also good for boosting immunity)

i hope you can open these links but a gentle yoga dvd would be good too. good luck, amy

Exercise is a great idea too! I used to have a couple of days/ month that I wouldn’t sleep at all and that went away when I started exercising more regularly. It’s been years since it’s happened!

I would recommend NOT taking any sort of sleep aide. If your BG goes low in the middle of the night, you might not realize you’re having symptoms and that could obviously be very dangerous.
