I have low sodium levels. I range from 129 to 133. Been that way for a long time. When I hit 129 doc said for me to stop drinking so much water. I did drink a lot of water and was always concerned with hyponatremia. After 2 weeks of very restricted water I increased some, not back to where I was (200 or so ounces a day to maybe 64 ounces. Drink of lot of crystal light and sugar free Kool-aid which does have sodium. I also have high blood pressure, so the doc does not want me on Gatorade. I take Olmesarten(Benicar) which drops my pressure very well. (Losarten was less effective). Any experiences on this to topic? I ordered a sodium test at Quest to monitor it. Used an online lab company and tests are done by quest.
Typ1, I was dx with hyponatremia and SIADH a little over 2 yrs ago. My sodium levels had been dropping before this. I was told to quit drinking as much fluid as I was used to doing. I am 5’ tall and weigh 107.
I am now drinking only 50oz of fluid daily. I also sprinkle salt on almost all of my food. I really like salt, so that isn’t a problem.
My last blood test had my sodium level at 129, but I had been using less salt. I added more salt and expect my sodium level to rise.
I do have high blood pressure now, but it is well controlled with Losartan.
I am almost never thirsty so I think 50oz is fine for someone my size.
It took a while to get used to limiting my fluid, but it doesn’t bother me anymore.
Thanks so much!!
My father had that and went so low he was in hospital once at least. It was complicated due to many health issues including uncontrolled high bp due to doctors etc. I don’t remember what they did now. Saline and a diuretic which was new then that acted on water transporters to clear the fluid, it concentrates the salt. Fluid reduction is hard especially with d.

I don’t have this problem but I am a case manager and have quite a few of my patients with drug induced SIADH, mostly related to psychiatric meds, seizure meds, NSAIDS. For them yes it is a balance of fluid and salt. Some of them were able to change to different meds that reduced or eliminated the issue.
Thanks for the information. I am not on any of those meds. I have read that SIAHD is quite common for older women.
I had this problem along with high blood pressure, most likely caused by the medication. At the time everything I read and even my doc said eating more sodium will not raise your sodium levels, and of course having high blood pressure they tell you to limit sodium. Well I decided to experiment and started eating more sodium, like whole bags of sunflower seeds at a time. I monitored my blood pressure multiple times a day, did not change it at all. My next blood test a few months later showed my sodium above normal. I then recently read a new study that said eating sodium can raise your sodium levels.
I am testing my sodium today. Have been eating more salt. Adding soy sauce and salt. Have been restricting water soon. Will see n
Next week I will add a bit more water if it is very high. Test bp daily. Running about 116/65
I believe it is the medication as well. Docs say oh no never the meds! I take olmesarten 27. 5. Down from initial dose of 40
Also some docs supply salt tabs.
Salt definitely raises my sodium levels. I also test my blood pressure to make sure that it doesn’t get high.
