Hi. wondering if anyone can help please. I live in the UK and have 7yr and we have been pumping Omnipod for coming up to 2 yrs now.Over the past couple of months we have been having problems with the cannula site becoming red and because of this have been having to change pods more frequently sometimes only after just a day. When the pod is removed it just looks like a small insect bite. We have always rotated the buttocks and thighs as sites as he is very slight, He has no fat on his stomach and pod still looks too big for his arm even though we now have the smaller sized pods. Up until now have had very few issues and love the pod. Im worried we may have to go back to mdi. Any advice i would be grateful of. Thanks. Becky
I developed site symptoms similar to your description. When I changed from Novalog to Apidra insulin, those symptoms went away. You could easily check this by experimenting with a temporary change to another rapid acting insulin. The Omnipod cannula may not be the source of your problem. It sounds to me like an immune system (allergy) reaction. Are your son's BGs affected?
Thanks Terry. I am going to talk to our care team about this. His levels normally rise and then i check the cannula and it is red. His levels have been very erratic as of late but i just put that down to the nature of diabetes and growth hormones. Never thought it may be an allergy. Were your levels affected when using Novalog?
Yes. When the infusion sites became swollen and red, my BGs were trending higher, too. I've seen other reports here about Novalog allergies. I used it for quite some time before I started getting the swelling redness.
You correctly realize that many factors affect BG levels. It can be tricky to get things on the level and hard to maintain once its there. I was diagnosed as an adult so I have no experience with treating T1D as a child. Good luck. I admire the efforts of all T1D parents!
