I was just told, half hour ago, I have this. What does it mean? How come I just had a 24 hour urine four months ago, after baby was born, and it was good. How can that be? Finally, can it be reversed.
Also my husband was just told he has stage 4.
Hi, thanks for answering back. We just got the phone call tonight at six thirty. Dr. said my husband; 37, type I for 25 years has stage 4. He has not been controlling his sugars and his blood pressure was 170/102.
I have had type 1 for almost 13 years. I am sorta controlled, but not great. My blood pressure has never been better. I am overweight though.
I am not sure what details would help. I know nothing about kidney disease. Any information would help. I just don’t know what to think.
So sorry to hear this. Did you get the diagnosis from a specialist (nephrologist) ?
Here is a link with some basic information on the different stages.

Improving blood sugar levels and blood pressure are the key things to consider. Are you both on ace-inhibitor, such as Altace ?
Diagnosis came from our normal doctor. And we are both on just insulin. The Dr. did give my husband a new scrip, but we are picking it up tomorrow. I will check out that link.
Sorry to hear this but definitely take a steps back and take some time to relax and breath.
From what I have seen with my own diagnosis and others who have posted on this forum is that a diagnosis out of nowhere comes from a combination of your blood test for serum levels of proteins and creatinine, some determination that you are spilling some level of protein in your urine (including even borderline levels of microalbumin being spilled), plug the numbers into a formula for calculating Glomerular Filtration Rate and, voila, instant Stage 1, 2, 3, even 4 kidney disease without ever having to measure actual kidney function.
The key to diagnosing kidney disease, and the earliest indication of any kidney issues, is protein being spilled in the urine and since so many things can cause proteins to be spilled transiently, it is not likely that you're going to go from having healthy kidneys based on a 24 hour urine sample negative for proteins one month, to stage 3 kidney disease the next.
These days, the vast majority of doctors don't do 24 hour urine tests for good reason even though it it still the gold standard for measuring the amount of protein being spilled into urine, when done correctly. Most will do a spot urine test and measure microalbumin/creatine ratio instead. It's a decent enough test when done correctly but if you hit the gym and lifted weights the night before, for example, you'll blow that test somewhere into the stratosphere.
That's what happen to me, how I ended up with a stage 2/3 kidney disease diagnosis a couple of years back, followed by a "miraculous" recovery and stabilized normal kindy function a couple of months later.
I did go BP medication after my diagnoses which probably helped a lot but, these days, I seriously doubt I had anything close to Stage II kidney disease back then. Didn't mean I didn't lose a lot of sleep or shed a few tears out of anxiety, but the bottom line is, don't panic or put yourself through too much worry at this point. Kidney disease won't even be diagnosed, let alone Stage III, until you have two abnormal tests in a row at least a month a part.
Thank you for reply! I am very confused about results, not so much my husband as he has not taken care of himself for years and his blood pressure was 170/102. But my BP was normal. The doctor had my husband pee in a cup that day, but all I had was blood work. Can she get an accurate diagnoses? I just feel hit out of nowhere.
I have to echo what FHS has told you. You had one bad test. As long as your blood sugar isn't dangerously high, kidney failure takes years and evolved in an observable manner. You don't get diagnosed with stage 3 without direct tests and evidence of kidney damage. From what you said, you didn't even have a urine test which is the first step in finding protein in your urine which is the earliest evidence of damage (stage 1). I don't think it was very responsible of your doctor to just tell you that you had kidney failure without more evidence to diagnose that.
And if your doctor does suspect kidney problems, you should be referred to a kidney specialist, a nephrologist. That being said, it is very important that both you and your husband take care of yourselves. And a key element of that is controlling your blood sugar. In the end, it is the blood sugars that will cause stuff to fail.
ps. I've also had tests with protein in my urine (a sign of kidney damage) and been miraculously recovered. Lots of transient things can cause these tests to be off, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything.
there needs to be no insistence that you areill until you feel that way;
there is certainly not any proof that there is little to do with late stage kidney issues
you have to fihgt.
following drs klinghardt and omura, who detox children from autism and therefore studied preventing damage to the kidneys;
biopure matrix electrolytes or other sugar free electrolyte mix added to all water (most important part)
cilantro tincture; mix 15 drops with 1 tsp olive oil; rub into each side
sauna as often as you can - must be combined with electrolyte protocol
sit ups
massage lower back (or have someone else do it)
adjunct therapies:
acupuncture
reconnective healing
thanks!
good luck
