Hello, I’m a 50-year Type 1, using Omnipod5 and G7 now. Struggling with sequence of steps for changing sensor mid-pod cycle and for changing pod mid-sensor cycle. Anybody have one they could share? Dexcom has its steps and Omnipod has theirs for getting started at the beginning, but nothing that addresses when you have both already up and running and need to activate a new pod or a new sensor mid-cycle for the other device. Thanks!
Not I’m not a pod user but hopefully one will weigh in soon. Just wanted to say welcome to the community!
I first replace the Dexcom sensor and update the Dexcom app (which it automatically prompts you to do), and then I update the sensor information in my Omnipod controller. And yes, both companies have made this unnecessarily confusing.
Thanks! I might try to put together a step-by-step including your info and post it!
Thanks for that post. I discussed O5 a couple of weeks ago with my endo but neither of us knew that it now had G7 support! I’d never go back to the G6 after using the 7 so it was a no-go. Now I know better, the latest, thanks.
I do know about G7 changes though I can’t comment on the interaction with the O5 - I use Dash pods and therefore have to control both through my 'phone.
For the G7 the change just involves entering the new 4-digit number; the pairing code. On Android 'phones it is then necessary to accept the pairing but that is all.
Consequently the O5 could simply accept a new code (presumably entered from the 'phone which has access to the pump). Whether it does I do not know.
There should be no need to use the Dexcom software. I don’t. The 'pod can connect directly to the G7 without anything other than insertion of the sensor. You might talk to Insulet support about this; they are pretty good and certainly better than Dexcom support.
I would like to know about your experiences. I don’t like the Dexcom software (as I said I don’t use it) and I know that it isn’t necessary with the O5 unless Insulet were compelled by Dexcom to make it so.
I insert my sensor about 4-5 hours before i I use it. Call it a pre soak. Then I change my pod about five hours later and then cut over to the new pod.
My advantages are the pre soak, love it, it makes the G7 far most accurate, it is easy to do, just insert it and do nothing else. Let the former sensor operate, then at the cut off point, follow the dexcom steps to insert a new sensor. It works great,
For the pod, I like to install it first and then cut over to the new dexcom.
Is is perfect? Nope - does it work? Yes. Down side, you must keep the inserter and box around for a long time, until at least you cut it over. I keep the box and inserter and just pretend it had first inserted.
Hi @Christina_O. I’m not an Omnipod or G7 user (yet) but I see no one has put together a list of steps for you so I thought I’d try by reading the manuals. Either my Dexcom is wrong and I’m very low or some of those “instructions” were written by the summer intern.
I’ll PM you a link to a Google Doc I created that is a step by step guide that you can edit. I highlighted a couple of things the instructions leave as cliffhangers, you’ll have to tell me what happens when each app reads the G7 QR code.
@pear or @Rphil2 If you end a G7 with the Dexcom app before the grace period expires and start a new one will the “ended” sensor continue to send readings to the Omnipod until it expires? This way the new sensor could complete its warm up before telling the Omnipod about the new sensor and then there’s no gap in the readings.
I don’t believe it will. I don’t have the Dexcom app but I do have the receiver; it insists on “stopping” the old sensor before starting the new one. It may be possible to fool it by getting someone else to log the receiver/app into the new sensor from sufficiently far away to prevent it stopping the old one.
With xDrip+ controlling the Dexcom there is no issue; just enter the new sensor code and the old one just keeps on working (of course.) It’s possible to swap between the two sensors but there seem to be bugs in xDrip+ which cause it to get confused.
Omnipod did not support the G7 until very recently so they may have managed to fix this; it’s clearly possible it’s just defective Dexcom software that stops it working. Unlike the G6 there is no need to “activate” the sensor; the G7 just does it when it is inserted, so all the O5 has to do is to get the new pairing code and look for the corresponding sensor.
