Sudden insulin resistance?

Lynne, I did see an MD. And I received regular lab work for Candida through Quest Diagnostics. The candida has become so bad that it’s now showing up in my blood.

And yes, I did get a celiac blood screening, but those often come back negative (especially considering that I was avoiding gluten to begin with).

Further testing, or a biopsy would need to be conducted…which I am not willing or able to afford at this time.

I also took an actual blood lab for food intolerances. And they all make sense because every time I’ve eaten those foods, I’ve had higher blood sugars (a good example would be scrambled eggs).

It’s not ridiculous.

Systemic candida is a serious, potentially “life threatening” condition. Tests, such as those provided by Quest can confirm the infection. I do hope you will be ok.

We’re all pulling for you. If you think about it, let us know how it’s going: I don’t even know you but I find myself thinking about you a lot.

-Steve

There is a difference between allergy and intolerance. I was tested for food intolerance.

And yes, I received a prescription for Nystatin, an anti fungal medicine. There is a fungal infection in my blood.

Thank you Steve. I really appreciate your concern. I’ll be sure to update.

He did tell me this. I received the labs only a few days after I saw him, so while I did try to eat a few things with gluten…a gluten challenge would require two weeks of consuming gluten to show up on the lab.

He ran labs in other areas as well (for example, my thyroid). I could have waited and visited the lab two weeks later, but my schedule didn’t allow this.

Honestly, I’d rather get a biopsy at a later date than deal with high blood sugars and feeling disgusting for two weeks…I already know I’m intolerant to gluten. So for now, I’ll just avoid it.

Lynne, I don’t know why you want to argue with everything I say…I’m extremely sick and I’m just trying to get well (which includes an attempt at finding support on this site). Why don’t you focus on that instead of trying to support this idea that I’m an idiot for thinking the tests I’ve received aren’t B.S. and that I’m going to some quack of a doctor.

If you really feel the need to argue with someone, please choose someone else to argue with… I don’t have the energy.

I’m sorry that we have not been more supportive. I don’t think everyone appreciates the gravity of what you are going through. While many people associate candida with a variety of skin and mucus membrane problems, it can become invasive and when it does, it really is very dangerous. And diabetics are more prone to this problem, both because higher blood sugars really feed such an infection and further and also that many of us struggle being somewhat immunocompromised. A good evaluation of systemic or Invasive Candidate (IC) can be found here. IC is a form of sepsis, infections of the blood which are quite serious. This article quotes the mortality rate for IC as high as 40%. It is estimated that as many as 11,000 people die every year from IC. I’m sorry we have not been more comforting to you. I pray yours is a mild case and you get control of it quickly.

I honestly don’t knw but we’re pulling for you! Please keep us updated. What I have learned over the years with diabetes (almost 38) is that all our body’s act differantly with things. My dr said years ago (and I totally agree with him) “no one is a text book case of diabetes” I mean reading some stuff about how & what to do are great but my body just hasn’t acted the way these textbook cases said it would sooooooooooooooo. It’s great to have the info but upsetting when you find out it dosen’t work for you. GOOD LUCK & KEEP US UPDATED OK???

Hi jen. I’ve had infections of various kinds that didn’t want to heal thanks to Diabetes, but nothing – nothing – as bad as you are dealing with. It sounds like you and your doctor are doing all the right things, and I’m wishing you the best for a complete recovery as quickly as possible.

I do have Celiac Disease. I diagnosed myself using an elimination diet, and my doctors came around to putting it in my records even though I had quit eating gluten on my own and so registered negative when I took the test. Seems to me it wouldn’t hurt if you stayed off the gluten right now, anything to feel better. You couldn’t pay enough me to eat anything with wheat, etc., in it now that I’ve experienced how much it messes with my digestion. If I can help out in any with info on Celiac, please just ask.

Repeating everything bsc said, and Doris D said, and my very best to you.

Neither you nor I are qualified to provide medical recommendations. Many cases of IC occur in the hospital, where patients are already in dire situations, but that doesn’t mean that a hospital is the place to be. Jen has said she is seeing a fully qualified Dr and was tested with a proper test for the condition. The medication she is being given appears to be exactly what would be recommended.

Your comments come across as dismissive and not in the spirit of the community. Jen came here for support. She is trying to navigate through potential food allergies/intolerances on top of the Candida.

If I recall, when Jen came here, she was following a vegetarian diet and many of the the foods that she listed as being having intolerant to were the core of her diet. So she has been faced with totally changing her diet to the opposite. Frankly, I am impressed that has made such dramatic changes in her efforts to get well.

Hi jen. Now that all the talk has died down, I want to say that I hope you will keep us posted on your progress. I know that you will progress, even though I’m sure that you will have to press forward one step at a time. The current phrase: You Can Do It! We are a supportive site, really; as many of us keep saying, We care.

I wanted to tell you that the best book I have ever read about Celiac Disease is “Celiac Disease, A Hidden Epidemic,” by Peter H. R. Green, M.D., available at Amazon at a pretty good price. Dr. Green is the Director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia Univ. I first found it at our library, and then decided to add it to my bookcase.

I had the same problem, Doctor sent me for a blood test too specifically test thyroid function, hey bingo underactive thyroid,Now with thyroid hormone tablets i am back to normal.

Jen, I'm interested in knowing what you finally found out about your insulin resistance? I'm having similar issues and went through similar testing. Just wondered what you finally did to resolve the issue?

So are your BGs elevated alot of the time? Because that's when I start dropping weight and realize I'm in trouble.

Hey!

I have severe Candida, it has been for around 8 years now. When I started getting low thyroid, I noticed I started getting big headaches, insulin resistance, and itchy "down there". Despite getting treated for hypothyroidism, these problems have never gone away. I also try to eat low carb, green smoothies, and follow the "PH miracle" protocol. It is extremely hard because I feel like I have no energy and constantly crave carbs. All this to say, I have not found any solutions! Sigh... I'm with you, I hope you can find a way to be happy despite the fatigue!

just fyi if you do get a celiac's test know that the typical T1 antibodies can cause a false negative on a celiac's test.

I’m all of a sudden getting this as well, only for me its weight gain and not loss (GRRR!). I’m suspecting maybe the time of year (for me), being sick with a cold, and possible tooth infection making my sugars go high? Called the endo today and he gave me a few things to do (most of which I was already doing). Hope you get it figured out!

What did your Endo suggest, Sarah72? I’m trying desperately to get rid of the sudden IR I developed after DKA.
