Summer Races/Events in Colorado

Hi,

Anyone doing cool events and/or races in Colorado this summer? I’m anxious to meet (in person) some other folks, doing some riding/running/climbling/swimming/beer drinking. What are you doing? Why is it a cool event and why should I be there? Colorado is the place to be in the summer (and winter) with so many fit people and so many awesome places to go and things to do. Lets talk, I’m excited to meet my fellows diabetics.
Daniel

Hi, Daniel,
I’m registered for the Desert RATS 50 mile ultra marathon on April 17 in Fruita, CO. I’m looking forward to it apprehensively since I haven’t been able to get in enough training miles. However, I told Peter Nerothin that if he signed up, I would.
Peter is type 1 and is the founder of insulindependence.org, and lives in Denver. If we’re lucky, he might find this discussion. He knows at least a few other diabetics in Colorado.
I may end up at another race in Colorado this year, but I’m not committed yet. I live in Chandler, AZ.

Hi Daniel,
I was born and raised in Colo. I only came to Texas to care for terminally ill parents. I am doing a TeamWild run on June 3rd in Boulder, Colo. where I am from. I was born in Salida and they have the annual Fibark kayak races every year that have become international. Even if you don’t compete it is a week of fun with Hooligan race down the Arkansas River where it can be anything that floats and not a boat! The white water river rafting is the best in that area as well. I took my son for a high school graduation present a few years ago, we took a hiking trip with no vehicle all thru Colo. for 3 months walking 825 miles. There are bike runs, so many places to rapell or climb and the best places to drink beer are Boulder but more Salida where there are so many diverse local brewed beers. The Fibark Kayak races in Salida are always the third weekend in June. You have to take it slow and easy and allow your body time to adjust to the higher altitudes. I can send you a personal msg. of more things I can think of off the top of my head. J

I’m actually good friends with Peter and that crew. April 17, huh? I do love Fruita. I definitely don’t have the training miles in…but, you never know.

It is a trail running festival with several options. Oh, I see that the 50 and 25 mile races have already filled up. You can still register for the 5 or 10 mile runs. Unfortunately, my race is on Saturday and the 5 and 10 are on Sunday. I may already be headed home by then. Or not. It would be great to meet up.

I actually live in Summit County, so I’m pretty familiar with the whole scene, but I just wanted to see if there already was a diabetic crowd forming at any specific event or race. I love Salida and the whole river scene and Fibark. That hiking trip sounds incredible, wow, I’m jealous.

TeamWild is a group of diabetic women running the race in Boulder. They gather from all over the country to compete. It is women that are on this Tudiabetic forum. Women inspiring lives with diabetes. Wow, if you live in Summit County then you already are pretty high up. The hiking is something my son and I will remember for the rest of our lives. The only problem we had was forest fires that summer that made us leave certain areas before we were ready to. I proudly wear a pin I got that says “I Hiked Colorado.” Doc in the ER read it on my jean jacket when I was there about 5 weeks ago.

There are some awesome races coming up in Breckenridge and Summit County if people are interested in randonee racing. The 5 Peaks is the biggest, longest randonee race in America, and one of the few that you have to do with a partner. Also, the long standing Imperial Challenge is a bike, skin, hike and ski uphill/downhill thing, very painful, and then the next weekend is the Marmot Grind at A-Basin, which is always followed by beer-drinking on the beach. Anyone attending any of those, tweet me up or email, I’ll be at all. Lookin forward to meeting some folks.

Wow, that sounds as grueling as the burro pull from Buena Vista to Leadville every summer - 26 miles. It is the most frustrating thing you can ever do. The scenery is great but you are so frustrated you can’t enjoy it. Yours sounds fantastic and where you live is great. My brother was the sheriff of Park County but lived above Alma which is over 9000 ft. as you know. I often struggled to catch my breath moving around. I was raised in Salida which is over 7000 ft. but in Boulder is was just over a mile high. You are one lucky guy as that is one expensive area where you live. Envy can be so cruel!!! (Sigh)…lol
