Swimming in the Caribbean

Going on a cruise regatta in the Bahamas in March and being a new OmniPod user, I am a bit apprehensive of what to expect when taking in all the water festivities in the Caribbean. What happens when swimming in natural waters like lakes, oceans etc? I plan to take part in everything possible.

I swim in the Atlantic Ocean all the time with my pod on. I’ve never had a problem at all. I’ve spent as much as an hour straight in the water.

Thanks, Jim. That’s good to hear. Do you have to change your pod more frequently than if you weren’t swimming? I need to know how many to take with me. I’d hate to be stuck on a boat for 5 days without enough pods.

Always take twice as many supplies as you think you’ll need.

And test a lot because your activity level sounds like it’s about to increase. You’ll probably have to decrease your basal rate. If you’re going to drink much you need to know carbs and how alcohol affects your BG.

Have fun.

I’ve never had a problem with swimming causing me to have to change a pod prematurely. As long as it is stuck on well, it stays on for me. I’m not one who has had problems with the adhesive, and I don’t do any special prep other than an alcohol pad. That said, take a few extra pods – at least 2-3 more than you think you will need. You never know when one or two might fail. I’d also take some long-acting insulin and syringes, just in case you need to go manual. Good luck.

Robin,
Thanks for your reply. Well, I’m always active so that won’t change much and I’m sure I’ll be sure to watch the extra beverages’ effect. Thanks for the info!

Thanks, Jim. I appreciate your input.

Hi Jim,
I just wanted to thank you for your input to my thread. The OmniPods did well in the Caribbean. I was in the water each day and didn’t have any problems. I think the key was to not put any sunscreen on until after a pod was placed and activated. Thanks for your help.

Dana

PS - It was an incredible vacation!

Good to hear, Dana. You definitely don’t want to put your pod on anything but clean, dry skin. I’m glad you had a good vacation.

Dana, can you tell me where you wore your pod while in a swimsuit? And one piece or two? And how did you handle sunbathing? Thanks for the input—just started the pod and am planning on heading to Mexico next month

hey, i’m a french mum. I don’t speak english very well, sorry. I saw that you are a omnipod user and i want to have some information about this pump. My children, two years old is diabetic type1 since 9 month. In france, we don’t have this pump. Is it a good pump. where can you have it , how much… i have a lot of question because i hope, one day, soon, we can have here tis omnipod.
Thanks a lot. Corinne

Corinne, if you look around this forum, you will find many people using the pump with their young children. I would suggest you post a new topic with specific questions, as your question regarding the omnipod and children may get lost under this topic regarding swimming.

Hi Gina,
I wore my pod on my abdomin in a one piece suit. I swam every day and loved it, but did not like another “bump” on this diabetic bod. I tended to wear a skirt type cover up and it really didn’t help that much, but when I was out visiting with people that didn’t know me, I felt like it helped alieviate some of the noticing eyes on the pod. I’m just to the point where I just have to be humble and suck it up. Good luck in Mexico and let me know how it goes!
