The Cost of Test Strips

I am on the pump and normally test my blood sugar before and after meals, before and after exercise and when my basals start to change I test hourly 'til the next meal. How do those of you who have no insurance manage blood testing when the money isn’t there? My husband got laid off and my insurance ends in 2 weeks.I have to reduce my testing in order to be able to put food on the table.Any ideas would be grateful.Thank-you.

I switched to an Easy Pro Plus glucometer from Target because where I live the strips are the least expensive of all, less than $19 for 50 of them. I don’t have insurance, either, but have gone without some things here and there to ensure I have strips.

Reli-on from walmart dirt cheap and fairly accurate there meters are fancy but they work

I found some health insurance from Manulife that will allow me to spend $2500 a year on test strips. This is a godsend because my premium is less per year than the cost of test strips.I have other meds that I take so it puts me way ahead of the game.

I agree! The Reli-On is my backup and I’ve found it to be very accurate compared to my One Touch. I can get 100 strips for $39.

We have purchased some disposable meters and strips from walgreens called Sidekick - my Mom gets them for me in Delaware when she sees them on sale - 19.99 for 50 strips and meter ( an all in one gadget). I have tested them against my son’s other strips and there is usually only a 5 - 10 point difference. Another advantage, they are very small and easily portable.

Do the companies offer free supplies like they are doing for presciptions for folks who can’t afford them? May a call to inquire…the worst they can do is say no.
