Hi,
This may seem a little unusual, but it seems that the less Lantus I take at bedtime, the better my blood sugars are in the morning. In fact, I’ve found that my blood sugars are the best when I don’t take any Lantus at all. For an example, if I take 10 units of Lantus, then my blood sugar will be somewhere in the mid to low 6’s in the morning, while if I take 7, then it will be somewhere in the 5’s. If I don’t take any Lantus, then it will usually be in the 4s. Is it possible to go low during the night without realizing it? By the way, I am a type 2, and my insulin sensitivity has greatly improved during the past few months.
Yes, it is possible to go low during the night without realizing it.
If at night today you don’t need lantus you could try doing it in the morning and see if it helps you during the day.
At night it will be almost over.
It’s possible that Lantus is causing lows overnight & you’re rebounding (liver dumping glucagon) with higher morning BG. This would explain why the more Lantus you take, the higher your fasting readings. Likewise, smaller doses aren’t causing a rebound effect, so better readings.
I had serious lows on Lantus & took it in split doses before changing to Levemir. I’m T1. Lantus doesn’t last 24 hours for many people. Good suggestion from garidan to take it in the morning instead.
The only way for you to know if you’re going low during the night is to test. Set the alarm for various times on different nights (2:00, 4:00, 6:00 for example) and test.
