The Mind Is A Powerful Thing

Curious to know if the following has happened to any of you, I would assume so.

About a year ago, I headed to the mall to do some Christmas shopping. Normally I have something with me at all times in case I get low, but I realized I didn’t have anything on me once I entered the mall. I quickly decided to look for a vending machine to at least have a coke with me. I immediately started to feel low, the shakes of the hands, the rapid heart beat and sweats. I started to panic real quick, but I finally found a vending machine. I bought the coke but said to myself first, let me check my sugar real quick before I drink anything because I felt that my mind was just playing tricks on me, because i’m really paranoid when it comes to getting low. Sure enough it was, my sugar was about 320. I find it amazing how easily we can feel something thats not there just because we panic or freak out. Good thing I’ve started to take care of myself and actually had my meter with me because in the past I would of just drank some of the soda.

Does anyone else have this happen to them?

Still happens to me from time to time but at least now I know to check first before treating (well least most of the time).

Hi Elisa,
Super good subject. It has happened to me couple times! You are right… Our mind can be very tricky and seriously responds to what we believe.
Good topic… that just reinforces the importance of measuring the blood sugar frequently, mainly when we are in doubt about what to do…
Thanks for sharing

Yes…many times. I will feel all the symptoms of a low…and NOPE! I seem to do this at 3am, when I had so many lows in the past years…I will wake up and feel low and I am not…my mind seems to like to play that trick on me. But, I always test myself before treating a false low.

I had this happen a lot when I was first diagnosed. My endorsement said it was from super fast changes in BG (up and down) plus other hormone playing a role. Once I got off oral contraceptives the fake shakes went nearly away. I only get them every now and then.

One of the info sheets I got when I was diagnosed listed symptoms for both high and low blood sugar. It was stuff like drowsiness and fatigue. Hunger and hunger. Some to the symptoms were so similar that I thought to myself this info is not helpful. It made me realize that the only way to know was to test. Else I might just make a high worse.

@Fabiana I agree, it definitely proves we have to always measure just in case. I realized that I was probably always treating for highs just because I was low, scary thing to think.

@Robyn I always have this happen to me at around 3am as well, its really odd. Ill jump out of bed all worried, only to check real quick and see that its high or normal. Hate dealing with this.

@GoldenGaitK9 - Im glad you only get them now and again, I mean id hope we’d never get them but its hard to have it go away completely. I didnt know oral contraceptives could do that either.

@Corinna I find that both high and lows have the same symptoms but I notice the fast heart beat only when really low. But its terrible when you have an awful headache thinking ur high when you’re actually low.

Thanks for all the comments, glad to know that Im not the only one having to deal with fake lows constantly.
