Thinking about starting Dr. Bernstein's program

Hmm…sounds like a great program to get in control. l was wondering if anyone could answer my questions about the program. 1st, should I buy his book “The Diabetes Diet” to get started? 2nd, is the program easy to follow? 3rd, does his program help with weight loss, if yes, how much did you loose? 4th, are there expensive, “strange” foods required to follow the diet? Any other “fyi’s” would be appreciated. Thank you.

Don’t bother buying The Diabetes Diet. You can find far better & more interesting recipes free on low carb recipes sites & there are a ton out there. Diabetes Solution is all you need.

I don’t think it’s hard to eat low carb & enjoy it. I’ve been doing this for 3 years. There are many creative low carb recipes that substitute low carb ingredients for high ones. For example, I use almond flour & coconut flour for baking, though it’s still a matter of portion control. Once you stop eating carb heavy, the carb cravings go away.

No strange foods. Low carb is moderate protein & high fat. It’s basically protein, low carb vegetables & nuts.

Most definitely helps with weight loss.

I definately agree with Gerri. In fact, I started DR. B almost 9 months ago and preach his approach to anyone who is Type 1 or Type 2. I have been Type 1 for almost 20 years, and at the time I was diagnosed his book wasn’t written yet so I only found out about who he is 9 months ago. I have never felt better, had better blood glucose control or been happier in my life. This is the best approach out there in my opinion. If you are over weight you should see weight loss. But remember, this book also helps you control your blood glucose, not just lose weight.

It is not an expensive diet, because you are not gorging yourself on food. You don’t feel hungry most of the time. The cook book is fine, but The Diabetes Solution Diet book is the book that tells you all about the diet. Stay on this site and you will learn everything and more about DR. B.

I hope you do join his diet, you will see improvements and success.

I agree with the others as well - the Diabetes Solution is a great read. You can also check out Robb Wolf’s book, The Paleo Solution for information on how a no-grain/sugar, low-carb diet can help even more than your diabetes. I’ve been eating this way for 2.5 years now and have never felt better nor have I ever had such great, consistent blood sugar control. I use syringes and have a 5.6 A1C at the moment. The food is the most wholesome, nutritious food you could eat. Aim for high-quality food products as well to maximize your nutrition. After approximately 3 weeks of this, you will feel fantastic and won’t miss your grains! You will lean out as well. Just a nice side bonus of it all  Congrats & best of luck!

I would definitely recommend the book.[diabetes solution] I keep my copy above my desk and refer to it often. I haven’t found the need to buy any "expensie foods. I’m a competent cook and make everything from fresh ingedients. this is the best plan. I did try the Da Vinci syrups and found them horrible. Far too artificially sweet. I now use Splenda and some Xylitol for sweetening. Xylitol is quite expensive, but I don’t ue a lot of it. Yes the program helps with weight loss. I’ve lost about 35 pounds, but I’m now stuck. I could do to lose about another 20. Keeping to the Bernstein eating plan isn’t hard once you get used to it and it’s very healthy, containing all essential ingredients
.

Ps I’ve been doing “near” Bernstein for about 3 years. I do however eat such things as carrots, tomatoes an peppers, which he doesn’t like . I don’t think the sugar in them is significant. I am a life scientist, so can make up my own mind and access appropriate data. I do believe that anything from grain is a "no-no!"
