If you saw any of my posts in the Parents of Type 1 Children forum, you’ll know how incensed I was to read about the recent ruling that dictates only RNs can administer insulin or glucagon to diabetic children. I do not know if parents in California have gotten the same great advice and support that our clinic staff in Maine have provided me, but if not… I want to make available to you the document I was given. Even though my son won’t be going to school for at least another four years, they made sure I had their Step by Step 504 Plan document. Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to upload the whole 4-page PDF to someplace where anyone could download it, but I’d like to share the most important paragraph:
-
IF YOU DETERMINE THAT THE SCHOOL IS UNWILLING TO PROVIDE APPROPRIATE CARE, AND THAT IT WOULD COMPROMISE YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY TO ATTEND SCHOOL, ADVOCATE AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL. Go to the District Office and ask to see the Superintendent. Try to reach resolution. CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY AND ENLIST THEIR HELP TO SUPPORT YOUR PLANS. THEN CONTACT DREDF.
