Just checking to see if anyone here has experience with acupuncture and Type 1. I've been treated with acupuncture sporadically in the past for a variety of chronic pain issues, but started a more involved treatment plan for my overall health last week. So far I have noticed an increase in energy and lower blood sugars- possibly from the stress release that occurs with acupuncture. Would be interested to hear everyone else's forays into acupuncture or Chinese medicine if possible. Just to be clear- I wear a Tandem t:slim insulin pump using around 25 - 30 units of Humalog per day depending on activity levels. I've found with acupuncture that sometimes I take lower than 25 units after treatments.
I welcome any thoughts from Type 1s. Thanks ya'll.
I have not tried acupuncture, but have a similar experience when practicing yoga regularly, which also lowers stress, When I first started yoga my practice was intense, involving about 90 minutes of activity 5-6 days per week -- and I ended up cutting my total daily dose of insulin almost in half.
That is pretty amazing. I have some issues with joint pain but have received a recommendation to try Iyengar yoga. Supposedly it's yoga with props so it is less pressure.
I've had it for a number of different issues. While my bg was affected, I believe it had more to do with the proper treatment and alleviation of my issues (pain, gastric distress, etc). I think it's really difficult to separate whether the treatments affected my T1, or if the treatments affected my pain, which then affected my T1. I have heard of practitioners claiming to be able to treat type 1, in which case I would run screaming. But that's another story.
