Unusual spike despite eating only 10 carbs

This morning I had a usual spike in my blood sugar. Through the night my numbers look good. I don’t suffer any dawn phenomenon as the 780 handles it. As I was eating it was shooting up fast. I only had 10carbs puffed wheat cereal, all sugar free.It went up to 15.8. I never do that in the morning! I couldn’t think of any reason why other than the site but I had doubts. I took a shot and changed the site. When I pulled out the old site there was blood in the cannula. I am wondering if I didn’t get the amount of insulin I needed through the night would it cause this high of a a bloodsugar?

A big rise in the morning isn’t that unusual for me and it seems plausible that it’s caused by having and needing very little basal during the night so there’s not that much insulin in your system, but I really don’t know the cause.

I would say that cereal of any kind has never really been my friend BG-wise. Its being sugar free doesn’t make that much difference because cereal is still carb-dense and tends to digest quickly — though if you just had 10 carbs worth (no milk?) it doesn’t sound like you ate much of it.
Switching to plain whole milk yogurt with fruit and slivered almonds has been enjoyable and easier on my BG personally but obviously you have to find foods you like. (I even sometimes add honey and it STILL causes less of a BG rise than cereal.) Delaying breakfast also helps me. I still like to have porridge (hot oatmeal) occasionally on the weekends but it doesn’t do my BG any favors.

10 carbs for me with out any bolus insulin would shoot me up 40-80 points (3 to 8 mmol) plus. And you were probably lacking basal at that point too. When I have a total pump failure in the past I have shot up to 300 or more (16 mmol) in about 3 hours. I just change it out faster nowadays. It takes a lot more insulin to bring it down after the fact than what the lack of insulin causes me to go up to!!!

I figured out what happened. Because it was such an unusual rise I took the site out and sure enough there was blood in the cannula. I am on such a small amount of basal that I can’t tell if the site is working until I eat something. Very frustrating.
