US FDA Approves DexCom G4 Platinum Continuous Glucose Monitor

Press Release

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Dexcom (NASDAQ: DXCM), a leader in continuous glucose monitoring, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its eagerly anticipated new continuous glucose monitoring system, the Dexcom G4™ PLATINUM.
Clinical trials report up to approximately 19 percent improvement in overall accuracy for the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM compared to the Seven Plus, and approximately a 30 percent improvement in accuracy in the hypoglycemia range (i.e., when blood glucose is less than 70mg/dl). The overall accuracy and ease of use for the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM sets a new standard for commercially available CGMs, making the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM the most-advanced CGM system available.
"Improved accuracy in the critical hypoglycemic range is most important from a life-saving point of view," said Terrance H. Gregg, Dexcom CEO. "The Dexcom G4 PLATINUM fulfills the promise of CGM for people with diabetes by providing accurate and reliable real-time performance."

This is HUGE news and I will order my upgrade with a Pink receiver tomorrow. There is a post in the Dexcom group with a little more info and more discussion of it at insulin-pumpers.org.

So I just got my one year replacement kit a couple of weeks ago, haven't opened the box yet. Do you suppose they will take it back and send me the G4?

Units shipped on or after Sept 1 are eligible for a free upgrade. If you purchased a system before that and it is still in warranty, the price is $399 to upgrade. If you’re out of warranty, you go through the insurance process of purchasing a new system. The phone number to call at Dexcom is: 1-888-738-3646

My system was replaced in June although I didn’t start using it until a few weeks ago. I did get a $200 rebate and my insurance paid The entire cost. So I will order the upgrade with the consolation that the rebate I received will pay for half the cost.

That explains why I will get the free upgrade; my 1 year replacement was sent Sept. 10. It's still in the box, unopened. I offered to send it back but was told to keep it as a backup. Glad to hear you got the $200 rebate, I put in for one but haven't received it yet-and my insurance also is supposed to pay the entire cost-holding my breath that they will.
