Oooh, so when replying to your post, I don’t have to @ tag you for you to get notified. Good to know.
And your post explains my issue. I think these are the buttons that my screen reader is just reading as “button, button, button” with no labels. I’ll just have to remember what order they go in, or see if I can’t find some way to tell my screen reader to label them, at least as a temporary measure.
I love that there is no time limit for editing posts. That always sort of annoyed me about the old site. Being able to delete posts is always good, so I’m glad that’s an option.
You Could be PortlandJudith or JudithInPortland or DharmaJudith or JudithC - just no blanks, like @irrational_John said
Whatever! I’m so so HAPPY to see you here, old friend. I’ll never forget the warm and friendly greeting you gave me when I first joined here, you are really a special friend.
The caveat is that you must use the reply button that is at the bottom of the comment you want to reply to. If instead you use the reply at the bottom of the page, then the association won’t be made. Discourse will instead assume your comment should not be linked to a previous comment and is intended to stand by itself.
They really should somehow label those buttons differently so that your screen reader detects a difference. .
Just to let folks know, I think you can always change which comment you are “replying” to while you are still editing your post. If you accidentally start a reply to one comment (or to the entire topic) but actually want it to be a reply to some other comment, you just have to scroll to the post you want yours to be linked to and click on that comment’s reply button.
Your reply should be reassociated and the text in your edit window should be unchanged.
FYI Jen, in the upper left corner of the edit window, on the line just above the edit button, there is the text Replying to post 21 Jen. That’s how I know that this post is going to be a response to your comment … the 21’st comment in this discussion so far.
I should qualify that it is merely a guess on my part that there is no time limit to edit or delete. Usually these time limits are under a day and I appear to be able to go back and edit posts I made over a day ago.
But it’s a just a guess. So I’ll tap @Brian_bsc and @MarieB on the shoulder and we can see if they can confirm my speculation one way or another.
It’s too bad my screen reader isn’t reading the mouse labels. There might be a way to make it do so, but I haven’t figured out how yet. Usually, when I reply to a post I’ve just read it, so using the right button isn’t a big deal.
I just tried to delete a post I made last year and couldn’t delete or edit it. When I went to the “last edited on…” link it opened the history but it was editied by an admin. Maybe this is why I can’t seem to edit/delete any posts, since I haven’t made any new ones yet and any old ones seem to be uneditable since they were imported?
Don’t know about the imported content. If it turns out there is something you actually wanted to change there then I expect you could always ask for help from the admin team by flagging it.
Also, I haven’t tried to edit or delete a topic post as opposed to a comment response to a topic post. I would expect it to work the same way, but … just haven’t tried it so I don’t really know.
Another reason the “like” button exists is to try to reduce “noise posts” which don’t really add any new content to a discussion. “Rather than posting “+1” or “Agreed”, use the Like button.”

Nice post Emily, but even in this short time, we have started losing some friends over some of these issues. (I’m one who’ not happy, but trying to wait it out, however impatiently…)
Add to your list: 1. REMOVE the 20-character minimum post size!
2. Need to change fonts colors or something – as it is the site is very tiring/hard to read for me, at least even though my eyesight is pretty good – and I assume anyone older or with any sight problems (and I believe many in the community are one or both of those)
3. Private chat capabilities (currently restricted, apparently)
Alright!!! It’s finally sinking in—JudithInPortland a la Camels sounds good, as John said. Will sort it out tomorrow—and I need to do a PSWD that I can remember, but I see directions around for that…Lilli explained “pinned” to me in a basic way that makes perfect sense, so I’m getting that—and I saw you pinned Reed for us.
NOW—about these texting abbreviations. I don’t text. I pick up a few abbreviations here and there from daughter and nieces when they email me and I have experimented with making up my own, but that’s about it. Do you think you could enlist one of our accomplished Texters to do a “glossary/guide” to such things. I notice them appearing more and more…Onward!..xx000
I don’t object at all to “like” buttons, but the damn heart is way too precious—makes me cringe to click on it. Any options for just changing it to a simple “Like”?
Jen—I’m having trouble seeing the icon thingeys at the bottom of a post—very pale and I forget to even look for them. I did have my David fiddle with screen contrast, etc and it didn’t help…But hey-----HI there JEN! I’m mostly roaming around hoping to find old friends as I go!..Blessings and well met! Now I need to figure out if we are still friends or if we need to do that again!..Onward!
One of the primary design aspirations for Discourse was to encourage, well, discourse. Conversation. Discussion.
I believe that is the purpose behind the 20-character minimum post size. If you’re not saying all that much, does it really need to be said? How much is it adding to the conversation versus how much is it just adding to the clutter?
As I mentioned earlier, Discourse also provides an alternative for one of the most common sources of “noise posts”.
I think this restriction on post size is viewed as a fundamental flaw primarily because of the popularity of the Word Association Game, I would hate to see the restriction lifted for the entire site just as an expediency. I think a better approach would instead be to create an add-on to support the game rather than implementing it as a discussion topic as it now is.
Again, it’s the Facebook mentality. “Like” buttons add nothing for people who are not big fans of Facebook. On Facebook “Likes” have become one huge joke in my opinion; sounds like you want to play into that.
I don’t do Facebook but like “like” buttons in forums because I can use it to let someone know I read their post (generally a post that was a reply to something of mine, but not always) without having to TYPE, which I hate which is why most of my posts are short. ie, it’s a quick way to acknowledge.
It’s fine as an option for those who want them - but not as the ONLY option. Here, to see who ‘liked’ something, first, you have to click on the ‘X people liked’ link, then hover over each icon for a name. Time consuming. I’d rather just see the comment and be done with it. Course with 1.5" of white space between posts, even on my 27" screen with fonts a “normal size” only 3-4 posts fit on a page - so short messages of any kind are tedious.
Hm… copy/paste from the screen doesn’t work so well, either (tried just not and failed…)
please “like” this post so I can try to figure out what you mean by ," Here, to see who ‘liked’ something, first, you have to click on the ‘X people liked’ link, then hover over each icon for a name"
Any idea when the blog section will be up and running? On the old site Forums and Blogs were the two features I used most, so I’m looking really forward to it!
NM. Judith liked my previous post and I can see it easily. Not sure what you are not liking about the “like” feature, when it comes to seeing who liked a particular post.
