What do you do when you just DON'T want to eat?

Food has played a major part in getting my blood sugars under control.
Sure the meds help, but basically, if I eat well, I don’t need to
correct with insulin and the Metformin keeps me nicely in range when I
do eat. So- what do you do when you just DON’T want to eat?

I’ve been rather run down recently- partially the heat, partially not
enough sleep, but I just don’t want to eat. I don’t know if you all
remember but I had a spell there where I could not eat meat, and just as
I was getting back into it, I had another incident today and am
completely put off meat again. So I’m kinda stuck. I honestly do NOT
want to eat anything. I thought I could still munch on veggies and soy stuff, but I have no desire to eat anything. I tried to have salad for dinner tonight and that just was NOT going to happen.

I have no problem consuming liquids, so I’m
staying hydrated, but at some point I’m sure the lack of nutrition is
going to bite me in the a$$. I don’t feel hungry. I don’t crave
anything and the idea of chewing anything is just beyond me. I’m
starting to concern myself a little since this has happened more than a
few times now. It seems to go on a for a few weeks and then I gradually work my way back into eating normally and then BOOM! it hits me again. I have an appointment with my Endo and CDE so I plan on bringing this up. The only slightly positive thing is that I do tend to lose a nice amount of weight with each “bout”, and thus far, I have not gained it back.

When I was in high school, I used to drink Carnation Instant Breakfast-
it was a powder you mixed with milk to get nutrients if you skipped
breakfast. I’m wondering if that still exists or if anyone has any
ideas what I could have if I don’t want to eat something. I’ve never
attempted a smoothie so I have no idea what to do.

I’m just feeling kinda “blah” right now. I’m kinda annoyed with myself that I can’t get out of my own head. I don’t even really know where I am going with this. Just rambling I guess. Oh- and just another little piece of randomness: did you know that Nicole Kidman is afraid of butterflies? Until yesterday I thought I was the only one on earth afraid of butterflies, so that made me feel slightly better.

I wonder if its the metformin that causes the issue. Sometimes I am the same way and I dont feel like eating anything at all. I take 500mg for breakfast and 500 for lunch. Since I like to bike I have to put something in the body to keep going. I eat a piece a fruit once an hour and yes the instant breakfast from carnation is still around

I think this one is 16 grams of carbs

You can make shakes & smoothies using protein powder that are far better & healthier than Carnation Instant Breakfast.

There are many types of protein powder. Whey isolate protein powder has the highest protein content. You want the isolate form, not hydrolyzed. Unflavored, unsweetened whey isolate is very low carb. It has a sightly milky flavor & dissolves easily.

Pea protein is another, but it does taste like peas. Good for adding to things like soup. Hemp protein is a vegan source. It has a bit of a nutty flavor & lots of good omega fats. I don’t use soy, but there are soy protein & egg protein powders also. I tried egg & it was nasty,

You can mix protein powder with unsweetened almond milk, add whatever flavoring & sweetener you like for a yummy, filling shake that is low carb. I use unsweetened cocoa powder, cold espresso, banana extract, vanilla (not all together).

Smoothies typically use fruit &/or fruit juice. You can add protein powder to these also. Just put whatever you like in a blender. If you want it thick, throw in some ice cubes.

When I was a kid & didn’t want to eat breakfast, my mother made me raw eggs, wheat germ, milk & flavoring mixed in a blender. I couldn’t taste the egg in it. Was her version of Carnation Instant Breakfast:)

I always eat, my problem is i don’t get full very often! I used to be really good with my diet but lately i crave sweet stuff all the time, i think i’m just looking for an energy boost or sugar high.
Maybe you have no appetite because of depression. Whenever i get a vomiting bug or just fell sick i go off food but i keep eating anyway cause i know i’ll just feel worse if i don’t. Maybe if you try to eat small meals regularly you will get your appetite back. You could also try doing exercise that always increases my appetite!

Maybe buy some protein powder from a supplement store and try adding that to a fruit smoothie to start your day. You might find it more helpful than Carnation Instant Breakfast. Carnation only has 7g of protein and I expect you will need to boost your protein more than that if you are not getting it elsewhere from your diet. Smoothies are easy. Throw some milk and fruit in a blender. If you freeze things like fresh blueberries or use frozen berries it will add the chill effect to the smoothie. Banana’s or yogurt will thicken it. Try not to make more of a batch than you want in one sitting as smoothies tend to separate if you keep the leftovers in the fridge for the day. The protein powder that David add’s to his smoothies adds 32 grams of protein to his breakfast.

thank you guys for the insight. I’m going to try my first ever smoothie today. I’ll let you know how it goes.

My partner doesn’t like butterflies either. Very bad experience as a 3 year old. Stuck with him. See, you are not that out of the ordinary.

I’m not always hungry on a low carb diet. While everyone tells you that your body can fool you by making you feel hungry when you don’t need to eat, it can also happen the other way around. You may not feel hungry when you should eat. So I’ve had to learn to eat when I am not hungry. Just another part of the cr*p I have to deal with being diabetic.

ps. I’m still working on it.

Boost Glucose Control isn’t bad. I prefer the vanilla to the chocolate, and sometimes add a little coffee for an extra “boost.”

I’m in “goal weight” but would like to lose another 5 lbs. The Atkins shakes are yummy and low-carb/sugar and I have one for breakfast. Also the Carb control yogurts with almonds are good too. It’s something in my tummy so I’m not ravenous and they are good. Yes, protein shakes are good as well- with ice and water. Filling, yet something for your tummy to chew on. I just watch the BS by doing all of this!

So, the smoothie wasn’t such a great idea, but then again, I had no actual recipe since I was too lazy to look, so I mixed a bunch o’ stuff and it wasn’t so good. Did manage a Glucerna shake, which was NOT completely horrific so I guess I’ll stick with that. Hubby tried to tempt me with Cucumber Rice Bowls tonight and even that didn’t fly so, looks like liquid diet for another few days. I definitely am beginning to think this is a heat related thing, because when I cool off, I start feeling hungry, and the rest of the time I only want liquid. I dunno. Weird. I’m going to check into the protein shakes thing tomorrow.

Seriously- thank you all again for your suggestions. I really do appreciate it.
