Having been all over the spectrum in how to treat lows I learned a new one last week from a local medic (who came to treat a fairly serious hypoglycemic episode.) She told me about Cake Mate, a commercial product used for icing cakes. It comes in a small 4.25 oz tube at the supermarket, is only $3.39 and you squeeze just a little of it under your tongue or on the inside of your mouth. One teaspoon contains 4 grams of carbs. It works incredibly fast! It tastes sweet, but the taste is not offensive. Its advantage over glucose tablets is that you don’t easily choke on it even if you are semi-conscious when it is given to you.
I use to have Capri Suns on hand (usually lemonade) but they recently switched to using lower sugar so now I use Minute Maid lemonade.
Cake icings are usually great-tasting and widely available and also cheap, I have learned that less exotic, cheap and widely available are great qualities, particular since lows can happen at the most inconvenient times, and for that reason smarties are a favorite and also sweet tarts, which are found at many places (including 7-11’s) … I’m from the perspective that simple, low-cal is always a virtue for anyone. I avoid high-calorie stuff, particularly high fructose corn syrup and/or fructose of any type – I find they take forever to work and also add unnecessary calories and often taste bad, too.
I don’t usually think about taste when I’m low, for me it’s more about substance. I always want to eat like pasta or mashed potatoes, something really hearty. I usually go with juice, though, it’s faster than pasta.
tabs if I have them but the juice box is my fave. For some reason in the past I use to crave (and still sometimes peanut butter and jelly), what can I say I gave in to what the body yearned for. I have to be careful with that because I ALWAYS seam to get the serving amount wrong, aka too much of a good thing.
Oh, but some friends I know really like using runner’s goo. it fits nicely in the meter case.
OJ is my favorite, but Im quite obsessed with it and have no control. I usually end up drinking the whole bottle so I stick to glucose tabs.
My son loves Maple syrup, yeah yeah the real kind
or candies or Orange glucose tablets!
I don’t much like glucose tablets but have used them on occasion. When I’m out and about I carry a roll of good ol’ Cherry of Butterrum Lifesavers. 4 candies = ~60 calories and 15g of carbs.
When I’m home I sometimes splurge on things like Reeses Pieces - mmmmmmmmmm.
I use glucose tablets most of the time but have found that Bob’s soft peppermints do a great job and I love them. 3 is 15 carbs.
It depends on how low I am but if I’m under 40, I eat anything and everything! I lose all self control and usually end up needing to bolus for the extra carbs. For some reason peanut butter always sounds good when I’m low.
Simply orange juice (the brand) YUMMY! And Cheez its!
Lindt Chocolate Truffles for lows close to 40. Nabisco Premium Mini Saltines for lows under 70.
Smarties. They were my fav candy as a kid and I still love them.
I usually use glucose tabs (I like Walgreen’s brand in raspberry) or, especially this time of year, I carry around 3 or 4 fun-sized packs of Skittles or 10 - 12 Jelly Bellies in a ziplock baggie in my purse. Depending on how fast I need my numbers to come up determine’s which remedy I go for.
I have a small variety to choose from depending on where I am:
a juice box
fruit snacks
or mini bags of skittles
… those glucose tabs are yucky, imo
I use Glucoburst gel. It seems to last forever in my purse, and is clear. It also has a nice cherry flavor - Remember Starburst? just like the cherry one!
