You may have heard about a new study recently by the Joslin Diabetes Center that apparently shows many longtime Type 1s have lingering beta cell turnover, meaning their insulin-producing cells inside the pancreas are trying to start working at times. Even after 50+ years or more. This is fascinating research, and begs the question: What If the cure that we’ve all hoped for is actually somewhere inside of us? What if? I’ve written more on that study and some of my take on this whole thing over at my D-Blog, The Diabetic’s Corner Booth. Let me know what you think.
Fantastic blog! So I guess after almost 40 yrs there still might be hope. I thought there hope for a cure when I got into the islet transplant program but lost that hope when I tested positive for antigens that would have killed the little buggers after all. Thank you so much for posting this.
After 40 years type I, sometimes it takes very very little insulin to achieve a huge BG drop.
My late Father, and my hubby suggested the fact that maybe once in awhile things just kick in and sort of try to work…
The problem is, it makes control very difficult because the response I get out of one unit is usually just overwhelming, but at times is less reliable. I have always had problems like that including huge drops of over 100 points in half an hour from one unit.
Interesting idea, and ironic. The theory I was given as to how I developed T1 had its roots in the chicken pox. The story of type 1 is so amazing. If such a cure were within us it would tie up so many loose ends.
