I’m new to this dance with the big D and am working hard to change my diet. I have cut carbs WAY out and hope to find ways to continue to do so and to have some variety in my daily meals. I have never been able to eat a lot of breakfast first thing in the morning. I have to be up for a least an hour to really eat much and if I do wait, then I’m hungry. I’ve been fixing eggs different ways and I also just found Libby’s recipe for waffles, which I will try tomorrow. Recently wished I could come up with some kind of morning drink/shake type thing to alternate on days I fix eggs. I want to keep my food as healthy as I can so I’d like to learn how to make something in a blender than buy something in a can. When I read the labels on the cans of protein drinks, the ingredients are ENDLESS lol and I wonder how I can make it without all that stuff… whatever some of it is
Any suggestions on a morning drink that can serve as breakfast?
Any suggestions for a meal outside of eggs or the drink are also welcome.
Please share your favorite, we are all probably looking for ideas.
Yogurt! I buy Greek-style yogurt and sweeten it with a very small amount of honey or agave syrup. It’s really, really good and very low carb.
I think you could make drinks with yogurt, too. Yogurt, flax seed meal, protein powder, and whatever sweetener you like. Depending on how low-carb you want to go you could add a little fruit. I think if you google “low carb breakfast shake” you’ll find a lot of recipes.
I’ve eaten the same breakfast for years most mornings. Rye toast w/ peanut butter. It is low carb, light, has protein and fills me up. Occasionally I’ll also have a couple of turkey sausage patties & top w/ sugar-free syrup. Another thing I have as a snack (but it’s more like a breakfast item) is a bowl of Special K Protein Plus cereal (14 carbs in 3/4 cup) with Calorie Countdown milk (3g carbs in a cup). I love this milk! It’s real milk and a few other things including a small amt of Splenda, ultra-pasteurized and so it lasts longer than regular milk and it’s low carb. Yogurt, as Barbra said, is great too. Oat bran or steel cut oatmeal is good too. I’ll have half a serving on the rare occasion I have it.
I also have a hard time eating breakfast when I first get up so I just don’t unless it is the weekend and I can be up for at least 45 minutes before eating. I usually eat a Think Thin bar for breakfast. They are diabetic friendly, have lots of protein, and actually taste really good! They don’t have that funny taste that alot of bars have. They have 20g of protein and 26g carbs and will hold me till lunch when I am actually hungry. They have lots of flavors and some other varieties that are called ThinkGreen and ThinkOrganic that I also think are low sugar but I haven’t tried them yet. I order my bars online at drugstore.com as it is cheaper than buying them at the store.
I have also tried Boost Glucose Control drinks and they work OK. They taste better than most of those protein drinks but they are EXPENSIVE! Plus they have alot of calories from fat. I keep these in the fridge in case I am having major lows or I am sick but I can’t afford to drink them everyday.
OOOPPS! I didn’t communicate well on this one I do eat breakfast everyday but on work days when I am in a rush, I eat a Think Thin bar. On the weekends I will have a normal breakfast after I have been up for at least 45 minutes…So Think Thin is my favorite during the week and I like the FiberOne pancake mix on the weekends. We usually have egg beaters and turkey bacon with the pancakes.
Brown rice, vegetables and curry powder (no kidding). Very satisfying.
But…my really indulgent breakfast is scrambled eggs, sausage and pancakes at Denny’s…
Sounds good. The greek style yougurt does not have added cornstarch so it is great. I eat it with ground flax seed a bit sawdusty not sweetener I dont like sweet and never did. What type of protein powder do you add, my son has some body building stuff no sure how much sugar it has? Sometimes I add a few pieces of Costco pickeled herring which is unfortunately quite sugared and salted otherwise it would be perfect. I guess you could throw in some other fish like tuna or salmon for extra protein.
I get the milk at my local grocery store - in the milk aisle, next to the soy milks. They have low fat, no fat & chocolate. I prefer the low-fat (5g fat) over the no-fat. I haven’t tried the chocolate.
Hi, new to this website but I am beginning to like it … anyway I generally eat Middle Eastern meals. For breakfast take some Greek yogurt and spread it on a soft ww tortilla. Chop a small tomato, cucumber, green pepper, really any veg you want, and than top it off with some lean turkey meat (or some grilled tofu marinated in some spices), roll and enjoy. Or instead of the Greek yogurt you can use hummus (which is pureed chickpeas with some olive oil, garlic, tahini sauce, which is easy to find these days, a bit of lemon juice). You really can add all sorts of lean and healthy stuff to this … Enjoy …
I always have trouble with breakfast. I don’t like eating when first getting up and I don’t like breakfast food. So it is a double whammy for me. Plus I can’t eat peanut butter or drink milk:( At least until I get rid of the infection in my intestines.
If I am allowing myself carbs, I will have a half of an fried egg or egg salad sandwich on a piece of ww toast or I will make a smoothy using organic frozen berries and a bit of unflavored, unsweetened whole milk yogurt, almond milk and da Vinci sugar free peach flavored syrup. I’ve gotten tired of the South Beachy vegetable omelettes, but will come around to them again.
I LOVE the Atkins Milk Chocolate Delight shake. I drink at least four of them a week every week.
As far as meals go, sometimes I will have a piece of wheat toast with Cary’s sugar free syrup or Smuckers sugar free jam. I almost always have eggs as well if I’m not having a shake, but I love eggs!
really?? that is good to hear. I was just at costco and they have a shake called premiere … chocolate protein shake… but I didnt’ want to buy 20 of them if they tasted like tin foil. LOL What are the carbs in the adkins shake? And if you drink it for breakfast, do you eath anything with it? Does it fill you up? Till lunch?
My early mornings are crazy trying to get the family out the door for school and work, so I don’t normally eat until I get to work and settle in for the day. Around 9am I done with my coffee and ready to move on to food! Because I am so busy in the morinings, on the weekend I make up snack baggies fill with different things I can eat (mixed nuts, turkey jerky, pumpkin seeds). Then on week day mornings, I just grab 2 or 3 bags, a piece of fruit, stick of string cheese or hard boiled egg, throw it in my purse and run (my hubby does make me sandwich, using Aunt Haddies low carb bread, 7 carbs/slice). So, usally I will have some nuts and cheese or egg for breakfast. What ever is left over from my “snacks” I eat in the afternoon.
PS. I always keep a jar of peanut butter in my desk for that unexpected need for a hunk of peanut butter on a spoon!!
There is only one gram of digestible carbohydrate in the Atkins Advantage Milk Chocolate Delight Shake. It has four grams of carbohydrate, broken down that’s three grams of fiber and one gram of sugar. I usually never eat anything else with the shake. It usually keeps me satisfied from about 8:00a to around 11:30a.
Do yo know if the Premiere shakes are available anywhere other than Costco? I would like to give them a try.
