Hi guys. It's been a long time since I've been here. I have a question. I'm not happy with the way my GP is handling my diabetes, her lackthereof. He's happy that my a1c is 6.1, where as I'm not. He only wants me to test 1 time per day. I told him and showed him my glucose reading spreadsheet and on more than a few occasions my fasting bg has been around 119. It usually is around 105 or less. I eat very little carbs as I'm on the south beach diet.
I'll be going to my GPs office to fill out paperwork to have my files transferred to an endo in my area. I'm not telling my GP as he has a huge ego and will be upset that I'm wanting to see an endo. Am I doing the right thing?
I'm on 2000mg of metformin ER and am still not happy with my bgs. I routinely see my post meal readings at 150 and I do not like that. What should I do?
You are the customer. You get to choose. This is about your health, not what makes your GP happy. You have diabetes, you have every right to consult a specialist.
I'm with BSC. While as a type 1 I'd kill for numbers like that, it's your health and you are the one who has to live with the consequences of what is going on with your body. At the very least, I DO NOT think that just testing once per day is adequate. There's no way to trend data testing that little.
Keep in mind that 150 after a meal is not that bad...again, this is coming from a type 1...but my understanding is that organ damage doesn't really occur until BGs are over 140 for an extended period of time. That said, your A1C does indicate that you're staying elevated a little longer than you should be, but not horribly so.
well apparently I have to have a referral for insurance purposes. So since I have to see my doc on monday I'll bring it up and say i want to see an endo for my diabetes. I hope that doesn't cause him to question me further. I just don't feel like he's doing what needs to be done to get my numbers down. All he cares about is my a1c. GRR So I'll just bring it up on monday.
Your doctor is your paid expert advisor. Your doctor is not your boss. I respect my doctor's training, knowledge and experience. When I disagree with his advice I politely tell him so and, if he is prepared to listen, discuss my reasons why and ask whether I am taking any risks by taking that action. Then I make my own decision, taking his advice into account.
My doctor is prepared to listen, but if he was not he would not be my doctor. Nor would he be my doctor if he got upset with me.
