What's Your Favorite High Blood Sugar Stress Buster?

I think it is so easy to beat ourselves up over a high blood sugar and make the situation even worse. You bolus and then cycle through testing and bolusing etc. And then our feelings linger. My approach is to do just look at the number, take an Intramuscular Injection and normalize my blood sugar, even if it is a multistep process. And then I “FOGETTABOUTIT!” I mean what can you do, you can’t undo the past. It is what it is.

A high that’s been going on for a while? Take extra Invokana. Hot drinks without calories. If its meal time protein and fat. Some eye drops. Slow down. Take a nap. Water with electrolyte. Quinine (tonic water).

I really would like to investigate Invokana more…! You must be seeing success???

Invokana (and other SGLTs) are not generally recommended as a way to treat an immediate high. If your high has been persisting for a day or so that could work. I would however not exceed the recommended maximum and it is probably good to talk with your doctor before using this strategy. The water with electrolyte suggestion is a very good one, that can help flush out a high. Our bodies naturally excrete glucose when out blood sugars get > 160-180 mg/dl and that can help accelerate that effect.

Your suggestions sound great, I think I will give it a try. Thanks…

What is rage bolusing? I’ve been running in the 300s all weekend and I’ve been increasing my usual 5u Novalog up to 8 u. I also take 15u Lantus at bedtime. Im scared to go higher than the 8u, because I’ve had some very low lows ~ 38, 42, 46, etc. Thank God my little chihuahua has woken me up by pawing my cheeks, licking my eyelids and sticking his little nose right on my mouth, sniffing my breath. I just got my minimed pump, but am waiting for my pump training.
I joined tudiabetes a few months ago & have been reading diligently.

from another topic here on “diabetes vocabulary”…

As a much better alternative to rage-bolusing, a good brisk 15-20 minute walk with a couple of units of IOB will often do wonders to knock one of these things down.

I prefer a 15-20 minute roll in the hay but to each their own

All a matter of timing and having the right person near at hand, but certainly a good alternative. Though the topic does threaten to divert us into the problem of vigorous exercise causing hypos and consequent effects thereof.
