When filling the new pods w/ insulin

after hearing the two beeps I pull the syringe out of the pod and several times I've had a puddle of insulin at the fill port.

I didn't discard them, I just wiped it away and stuck it on. It just worries me that I have less insulin in there than I had in the syringe. Once I had to pull the pod early because it wasn't even going to make it to the 72 hour mark (I usually wear them all 80 hours).

Just curious if anybody else has seen this.

I saw this recently too. I'm still trying to decide if it was a fill port issue or a poorly fitting needle on the syringe. The new syringes do not impress me much, and the needs often fit very badly. I've since tried hard to make sure the needle is strongly fitted to the syringe, and have not seen the puddle since that one time.

Are you pulling out the syringe as soon as you hear the beeps? I usually do a fairly moderate rate push, the pod will beep to activate, and I keep pushing until the plunger reaches the bottom, then I wait a second while the coil is still reversing to make sure it all stays in. Sometimes I get about 1-3 units pooling on top, but only on occasion. This used to happen with the older pods too.

Why would you pull it out at two beeps ? That signal means you have the *minimum* needed to power on the pod - 85 units or so -NOT that it is full. Do you intend to fill it only to the minimum ?

I try to push the insulin in rather slowly and I'm never done when it beeps, so I continue to push until it's all in.

I make sure the needle is pretty secure on the syringe too. But I'm also not impressed with the new syringes. I understand the needle had to be shorter because the pod was smaller, but that needle is pretty short:X

I have had that happen twice where the insulin starts pooling up as I'm filling it, and it hasn't ended well. haha. The first time I changed my pod on a Sunday morning around 7:00am. Around noon I noticed that it said I only had 48 units left. Umm, what? Then I got the high-pitched squeal of doom soon after. Another time it happened and again, it was around five hours after filling that I got the error and had to change it. Very frustrating.

This morning I could see just a teensy bit of insulin pool, so I'm hoping it's ok. It's my fear that I'll get the high-pitched squeal at a very inopportune time (like when I'm in church at a very quiet moment, or in a meeting). Luckily that hasn't happened to me yet. All my errors have been around family or in my office alone.

When the insulin pools up like that, I always consider just starting up a new pod right then, but I always wonder if just this one time it will work out for me! We'll see!

Haha. Awwww.

Two thumbs up.

Luckily, I've never had one that 'pooled' fail on me. That one that I had to pull early, seemed like it might have been in a bad spot and I was using alot of extra insulin. I usually fill w/ 100 units and that gives me a little extra in case I need it. But that time it wasn't nearly enough with whatever I lost in the puddle.

Love it!

I suspect it's just insulin coming out of the syringe. When doing insulin by injection we have to wait a few seconds (at least) after squirting all the insulin into our skin to let it come out of the syringe. Even then the syringe frequently drips on me (one of the many reasons I hate MDI).

The amount of insulin is minute; if the drop is 2mm in diameter (1/16th of an inch) it holds about 0.5 units of insulin. If it's an eight of an inch in diameter it's about 1.5 units.

The syringe is plastic, and fairly plastic plastic at that, so it expands (slightly) under pressure. It's quite large, so if there is still pressure - if the pod hasn't pulled the plunger all the way back - the syringe will leak when it is withdrawn.

I hold the plunger forcibly against the tabs on the syringe body while I withdraw it, this minimizes the amount of insulin left in the syringe at the end and therefore minimizes the amount of dripping - I hardly see any.

My very first pod pooled when I was filling it with my trainer. It was fine, she just showed me how to wipe it away. I've had it happen only a few times since then and I haven't noticed any problems because of it.

lol this happen to me lol

I always fill it (not too fast, not too slow) pull it out right away and THEN wait for the beeps - never had a problem!
