I've usually just let people be aware early on..
it doesn't seem to be such a big deal. I'd rather just date another diabetic though, ha.
Hey, guys, thanks for all your responses! I thought I'd let you know how it went. I pretty much did what you guys suggested - just treated it business as usual. I pulled out my meter, which he didn't notice, 'cause it was kind of under the table. Then, as I realized it was probably weird and obvious that I was fiddling with something, I just said, "Hey, sorry, I'm a diabetic, I'm just taking my testing my blood sugar," or something like that. He was like, "Oh that's cool, yeah, my dad is a diabetic as well, he takes shots." We just kind of moved on after that.
I will say we were hanging out last night (so maybe a week after the date) and we were sitting on the couch and I could tell my BG was dropping. I got up and tested pulled out my meter, and he was like, "Are you testing your blood sugar?" and I said, "Yup," by which point I'd already done the test. It was 37. He asked if it was okay, and I said, "Oh it's actually pretty low." He said, "Do you need some insulin or something?" Obviously doesn't know much about it yet, but I thought it was very sweet, in any case. I just said, "No, actually I just need some sugar." He was like, "Oh man, I don't really have anything, how about some sweet tea?" I just smiled, 'cause of course I had stuff in my purse, and was already treating the low.
Anyway, probably more information than you wanted! But I just figured I'd report back and say that it was fine, maybe a little awkward, but fine. These days, almost everyone knows someone with diabetes, so it's not as weird, I think.
No, thanks for the update! I was gonna post "I wonder how these things work out?" in this thread but didn't want to pry. It sounds like its going well!
awesomeness.
