I fell asleep at 113, woke up at 85 (yay!). All I ate for breakfast was 5 almonds and a few sips of coffee, not even half a cup. I then took the bus to the city and walked 30 minutes from the bus stop to my office...
I tested as soon as I got in, thinking I might be on the lower side. But....I'm 167. What the heck!
This has been happening lately. Luckily it is the only time I am really spiking through the day. But what is it?
Cheddar cheese omelete for dinner last night (HFLC)..is this the delayed spike from the high fat?
Dawn phenomenon. Maybe turn your basal up or something? It may also be useful to eat a bit more, so you cover it with some insulin. Even a little bit of uncovered carbs in the AM will crank up my BG so I don't do it. I'll bolus for like 5U if I just have skim milk in my coffee and to cover workout adrenaline I'll fire off a bolus before the end of the workout to give it a head start. Mornings are often challenging.
Yup, DP... any maybe the caffeine in the coffee? I have to take 1 unit to cover an 8 oz cup of regular coffee. But I know that caffeine affects everyone a little differently.
Side note, DP hits me differently every day of the week, so I can't just set a fixed basal rate and I usually have to chase it :( Good luck!
Thanks! Yes, I think it is a combonation of both coffee and waking up, no fair! 1 whole unit for a cup of coffee is exactly what it takes for me too. It almost doesnt seem worth it, but I am a coffee adict and not sure I could ever give it up! I try to eat super low carb, so bolusing for coffee always makes me mad lol.
It is those pesky aliens and their Darn Phenomenon. You were asleep so you didn't see them, but fortunately I got a picture of them doing their dirty work:
I also heard that if you sing the right song, you can "fix" the problem.
Yes, definitely sounds like Dawn Phenomenon. Ironically, if you eat more for breakfast, you will do better! (Besides which I don't think "a few almonds" is enough to get through the morning! Try eggs!)
There you go! Though if you do have classic DP, it will probably keep rising until you eat so you might want to consider getting up a bit earlier to eat before you go. (Easy for me to say from my comfortable retirement perch, but I did it for years, and found that though I hate getting up early, I generally felt better if I took a bit more time in the morning to work into my day)
I really struggle with DP. My response has always been to fast until I get the BG under control. More often than not this means not eating until lunch, and pumping a lot of go-juice.
I'll try the modest breakfast thing, and report back. Thanks for the tip!
I get this kind of rise if I don't eat in the morning. It just happened this morning, actually. I was 6.2 (112) when I woke up at 7:00, didn't eat breakfast or bolus, and by the time I got to my office at 9:00 I was 9.0 (162).
Yet, if I sleep in I am fine, so it's not a matter of basal (if I put my basal up I'd go low on days I sleep in). I do have a "regular" dawn phenomenon, too, and have my highest basal rate of the day between 3:00 AM - 9:00 AM. But this not-eating-breakfast phenomenon seems to be in addition to the regular one.
I think my solution will be to try and eat breakfast before leaving or try and do a 1-2 unit bolus and see if that helps, even though it's a bit unnerving to bolus when not eating and not high.
I'm not sure how much earlier I can wake up. I am up at 5:15 and then get ready and leave the house at 6:30. I guess I can find some time to squeeze in some breakfast
Are you on mdi? It could be your basal was running out depending on when you take it. It could be that you ate too little and your body produced glucagon to give you more energy to get going which is DP as everyone said. I find though I get higher before I eat with my DP> It could be you just spiked for some other reasons. It is very hard to say, but I would eat more for your breakfast and see what happens.
