2 days with bg over 170 nothing is working!

I am so not the one to have an issue like this but for the last 2 days no matter how much insulin I push into my body it is not going down below the 170’s I changed infusion sites and insulin vials and lord even took shots just in case it was a pump issue but no it just will not budge and when the ketones start tracing in I drink water and water and more water to keep them away and I just can’t figure it out!! ugghh!! sick? no not that I know of. stress? well same as ever work and school and family and friends. so I have no clue thought I would ask yous guys and see if anyone could come up with something I know that 170 is not horrible but I am always 140 and below so this is just not what I am used to I know I will prob. have to call endo tomorrow and see what the doc will have to say but I was hoping to fix it with out having to call or go I got to much to do to have this issue right now

Hormones? Could be that you’re coming down with something, but don’t feel sick yet. I’ve had high BG days before I have symptoms or fever. Another possibility is a dental infection. Been there.

Hope you get those numbers tamed. So frustrating!

I agree with Gerri
some type of infection(even if you can’t see it), cold, flu, OR stress?

Been there - I had to increase all my insulin doses to 130% or so for about 2 weeks last year and I still do not know why - you can have infections even if you don’t have any symptoms. If your body needs more insulin just give to him, sometimes ruminating just doesn’t help.

Good luck!

I agree with the others.: It could be due to an unknown infection, stress, hormones or any combination of the above. You are not too high yet, just give your body the insulin it needs to tame the tiger… Your blood glucose levels will respond in a downward trend as you slowly inch up the basal rates ( to avoid lows)… I know how you wan to get it down .I have been guilty of a superbolus or hyperbasal to just return to my sense of blood glucose “normalcy” while trying tame an extended high… Not a good thing… the Blood glucose sudden plunges and resultant swings upward are tiring, make me cranky/loopy, and a unhappy camper. So I will tell you too much too quick is not recommended… but I know how much you want to force it back into the cage…Slow and steady is the course…

God Bless,
Brunett

I am assuming it has to be struss or the unknown sickness because everything is like every other day just high bg’s to add. today it is nothing under 180 uggh I would rather a unexplained high I could dose and it go down not one I can’t seem to fix. I did put in a call to the endo office so we will see I might just be a fluke or the d-monster showing it still has power we will see I just hate being high for longer periods of time

Maybe the information in this discussion can help: Stress causes high or low sugars?
also this one: How much can stress really cause blood sugar to raise?

with all the insulin your administering, are you doing normal boluses or square waves? Someitmes when I have highes over a period of time it takes a square to bring it down.

The vat you changed to, was it from the fridge? Same bottle of insulin? Try possibly switching to new bottle to fill the res. and possibly, get a new one from the pharmacy.

When you moved the set, was it to a whole new section of your body? Ie., left side stomach to right side stomach? I know, Im just going through the check list!

Good luck. I hate when the unknown variables come into play. They are such a pain.

David has experienced exactly the same thing on two occassions. The first time lasted about 5 days and he did end up very sick by day 3 with large ketones. The endo on day 4 recommended bumping up the basal in his case by .5 units over the entire 24 hour clock. She said to set a separate pattern as she expected that we would need to return to his initial pattern in a few more days. No such luck. Never did return to the initial pattern.

The second time this happened we were much more aggressive in bumping up his insulin right away so we did not have the scary sick days outcome. The only thing that the endo could suggest is that his body was fighting coming down with something.

I hope you get this resolved quickly.

squarewave bulus?? humm didn’t think about that one I am going to try that one I did switch the infusion site from the stomach to the thigh to try and see if it was area related and then the whole new vial of insulin was tried but i just got a new batch from the pharmacy today so i will try one of the new batch ones to see i just hate calling my endo and admitting failure I am so not one to admit I can’t fix something on my own. personality flaw i am sure. well let me try the square wave and new vial and see. ty for the info.

TY i am glad to know I am not alone i have been diabetic forever but never had it where i could not get it down eventully. maybe my body just needs more insulin which is weird because i have lost weight from all my work and school and what not you would think the required basal would go down not up.

thanks for the articles I did not relize how much stress really does effect us

i know this may sound crazy but check your vitamin d levels

Curious. What do Vitamin D levels have to do with blood sugars? I was in recovery from surgery and was prescribed Vit D. I didnt know there was a correlation.

Thats not defeat, its just eliminating variables. Youll figure it out.

I noticed if I have a lack of insulin over time (tubing breaks or something) then an increase in insulin for a few hours is the best way to come down. Im under the impression that the thigh has a slower absorption rate, so keep an eye. and hopefully the new insulin / square will do the trick. Ive had my BS go funny like that only to have to dump a whole vial as it went bad.
Keep us posted.

First thing id say is might be worth a visit to the doctor… Im guessing (at least from the look of it)… You have an infection… at least get checked out on the reoccuring ketone issue… Something similar happened to me about a month ago… though I was a tad higher and an injection barely nudged it down even with a 10% added to my bolus…

I know you said that you gave yourself an injection to bring down your bg and it didn’t work and maybe this is way off base, but one time I had a problem with my pump not administering any basal and everything was thrown off. You could call your pump company and they could go through some checks with you to make sure you are getting the insulin you are suppose to be receiving. That’s how we discovered my pump was malfunctioning.

Good luck. I hope you get this figured out and start feeling better soon.

I agree with what’s been said.

Remember also that having high BG’s for an extended period of time will also tend to cause some insulin resistance. This compounds whatever problem you might already be having, and so you’ll need even more insulin to bring your BG’s down.

check your basal rates and make sure you didnt pull a “me” and delete half your basal rates by accident while reviewing. You changed sets, and insulin. That should have done the trick… Im at a loss. Have you called helpline or Endo?

I checked the the basals all is well there just not getting good bg’s as for endo i gave in and put a call in this morning so we will see. I hate calling the endo since i have to admit i have failed somehow but I can’t keep having these highs either
