So over the last 2-3 days my blood sugars have been pretty insane! Right when I get up and test my BG its been OVER 150; every day! My BGs have pretty much been high or low for the last few days and I don't know what is going on!! Any suggestions? Hypotheses?
Sorry to read about your volatile BGs. There are so many possible reasons why this is happening to you, it's hard to hazard a guess.
One thing that always works for me to regain control in an out-of-control BG context is to stop eating. I like to fast for 24 hours about once per week and it always has a good effect on my BGs. It's like wiping the slate clean and starting fresh. Test often to stay safe.
I first noticed this effect when I had to fast for various medical procedures. My blood sugar was always easier to control. Of course, I always treat low BGs with glucose if needed.
Beyond an initial fast (even just missing one meal works well), I would recommend keeping a log to track insulin, BGs, food, and exercise. This technique always works, even though it is a pain in the tail! Perhaps track everything for two or three days. I never fail to figure out at least some changes that help.
Good luck with this ever-changing puzzle that we must solve each and every day. You are smarter than D!
Thank you very much for your help! I will be sure to do that!
Are you coming down with a cold or the flu? Getting sick increases your insulin resistance which leads to higher numbers. I've come down with a couple this winter and each time my blood sugar has gone up by 50 points or so. If you pump, you can try to bump up your basal (using a temporary basal). I usually start with a 20% increase and if that doesn't work bump it up another 20%.
You are pretty new. Short stretches of bad numbers (and 150s aren't wonderful but they aren't at all dangerous over the short term) just happen sometimes. The choice is to throw insulin at the problem or wait it out, Eventually you'll probably just adjust your insulin as a matter of course but now you should do whatever feels comfortable.
Good luck with this,
Maurie
Last week I was having random, repeated highs of 350-450 out of the blue. Then I had a day where I stayed between 250-350 literally all day. After a few days of putting settings WAY up (my insulin requirements went up by about 40% over a matter of days), I was finally having less highs, but I could not figure it out.
Then a few days ago I got a cold. I haven't had a cold in literally years.
I find it fascinating, in a way, that my body seemed to react to it long before I actually felt sick. Now I feel blah but my requirements have gone back down, which I'm hoping is a sign my body has fought this thing off and it will only last a few days.
Hi Kaycee,
I'm sorry you're having these high bg. If it is not too much above 150 I wouldn't stress out too much because for a period it is ok. I would try to stay up and see what is going on- test every hour and see if you are going low/hypo and then having a glucagon reaction or if this is dp. If it's dp you may need to take an am basal dose to try to stop that, if you don't already, and or wake up to do corrections. Does it stay high after you wake up and eat or correct?
For me I don't fast because my body thinks I'm starving, I feel awful and my bg will often just get worse, especially if it's dp, but I would definitely try that and see if it helps you.
Another thing I assume if I get high bg and there is no explanation is that I must be fighting off a bug like Jen has said. I sometimes have several hours where I stay at 150 and keep doing 1 unit corrections and then it comes down while at other times I take a correction and crash. I never know what will happen.
I hope you get this figured out soon!

It stays high pretty much all the time. Even after I eat and I've taken insulin (sometimes a unit or two extra) and its been like 2-3 hours since I ate.
Thank you!!
Hmm, maybe you have a virus or maybe you have increased basal needs for some other reason. Are you coming out of a honeymoon maybe? I'm having a spike right now because I slept too long and didn't correct, ate, but the food correction didn't work and my large basal dose was due. I'm also on an antibiotic for a sinus infection but I don't think it was that because my bg was very good yesterday. I guess there is no way to know for sure. I would try some exercise too and see if that helps lower you.
No I'm not on a honeymoon (yet). I think it may be because I haven't been sleeping as much. I have headaches all the time, too. :(
