anybody hear about this? Not sure where you suppose to buy it or if your doctor has to give it to you
Hmmm, very interesting. Wonder how much one of those babies cost and if private insurance would cover it under certain conditions? Probably won’t find it here in Canada yet. You lucky Americans get all the latest gadgets first!!! Waaaaaa!!!
It’s sold at pharmacies like Walgreens or CVS. It’s a one time test that costs roughly $20. No prescription is necessary as my fiance bought me one last year without me even present. It takes about 5 minutes for results and the blood sample is the same size of a normal test strip sample. It’s pretty cool!
hahaha. We only get them after the UK and such. THEY get all the cool stuff first!
Marps - It’s that cheap to buy this machine for home use that Domol has shown here? It looks like a blood meter - and I didn’t think they gave those away - especially in the United States - unless there is some deal with buying the strips for the test, etc. etc.
Okay - just took a break after posting this - still within 15 minute time frame for editing (gotta love this website) . Found a link that shows the cost, etc. Still can’t find it anywhere else except the US as it’s showing the price of $29USD for 2 test kits. Cheaper then what you’d pay at a lab - but how accurate?
I’d be interested to know its cost. Right now, my A1Cs don’t cost me anything. If it’s too high, I can be patient.
I don’t recall exactly what it looked like, but the description sounds the same. It takes 5 mins for results, but mine was ONE TIME USE… that may be the difference than the one they’re offering through that site. It was pretty accurate results. I think it guarantees within 2 tenths of a percent? Something like that.
It was fun to do, and since my doctor canceled my last appointment and I had to reschedule for two more months later, I was considering buying one at the pharmacy to test my A1c now, until my appointment in July.
I’m the same as you Gordie - our provincial government pays for A1C’s and most blood tests - mind you - it’s a 2 hour wait - so for some - paying $29USD for an A1C - waiting 5 minutes might be worth their time - as I lose out on pay. I can pay and have my A1C done privately - but I have to pay over and beyond what my husband’s private insurance doesn’t cover (I think it’s about $30 - did it many years ago).
These used to be available years ago… sold through Metrika and ChoiceDM… they will be BACK in stores soon, if you can’t find them yet (my walgreens doesn’t have them, but the pharmacist said to check back next week).
It’s $30 for 2 tests, and results in just a few minutes… I like to know “where” I am before walking into my endo’s office, so for me, it was money well spent to be informed… I can’t wait to be able to use them again, since I am NOT patient enough for the mail away tests.
Mentioned on the site:
- Study results with healthcare professionals showed that the accuracy of A1CNow+ with fingerstick samples was, on average, 99%. This means that, on average, a true 7.0% A1C could read approximately 6.9%A1C. An individual A1CNow+ result may differ by as much as -1.0% A1C to +0.8% A1C from the true result. This represents the 95% confidence limits of a Bland-Altman plot.
so is it still worth it? i think so, considering blood work is expensive out of pocket.
Isn’t there a machine in in the doc office that can check your a1c right then and there or is this it?
Yes, the machine in the doctor’s office can spin off the A1c number within ten minutes, using only the amount of blood in a finger stick. I’ve had it done many times. They haven’t had to send out blood to a lab for about five years now (in my area).
The gadget that I have experience with is a one time use thing. You use a fingerstick sample, test results come back in 5 minutes, then you throw it away.
I dont pay for my A1C blood work I go in a week before my endo appt give blood then when I see my endo in a week they tell me during my appt. And using the omnipod it gives my a 90 BG average which currently is 124 and looking at the A1C graph an average BG of 135 = 6% So I feel good about mine My last A1C was 6.0 and my 90 day average was about 137.

I went to Walgreens last night and ordered an A1c test. They had to order it because not many people purchase from them. I should have it Monday night. We’ll see how it works! It’s been a few years since I’ve seen one. haha.
Then, I have my real A1c test in July with my doc appointment.
i love this log book. I print it out on a full page so i can write extra stuff on the sides.
