ABC News reporter seeking diabetes patients to interview

She was asking for background so I was trying to speak as generally as possible. I also told her that she should look around here because there are really skilled and experienced folks that I have learned a lot from just by reading the fora. The article really didn’t tell me anything useful about the beads, though. Unless the beads can form into numbers, I’m not sure intensity of light is going to give us the accuracy we need.

I was thinking of that also. But think of how a light meter works for a camera. You could have a similar device that you point at your skin and that would give a digital readout of a number.

I agree about the accuracy of the light. I know when my BS is low, things look differently than when it is stable. I need to know exaclty how low - I treat a 40 different than I do a 60.

I had actually emailed her about 2:30 before the cutoff time. She emailed back that she already talked to enough people but asked if it was OK to keep my info on file if she needs something in the future. I am sure she will come back here if she is looking for something because it is a gold mine of information!

I thought about a light meter of some sort, too. We’d still have to carry around a BG gadget. I can’t wear cargo pants everywhere.

these were my sediments exactly when I heard about it. What good is it to have a color telling you good or bad, when Im trying to nail down 80-100. Trends? Maybe if they make it a checkerboard of different colored lights. Better yet make it morris code me out a number. solid, solid, blink, blink blink — solid, solid, solid, solid, blink?

Pete, haven’t you seen the new “dress cargos”?

Consider this my order for an autographed PDF copy of the article, Peter… You know where I live

Well they could have a light meter smaller than an ink pen. That wouldn’t be so bad. And no more poking. Also you could use the camera on an Iphone as a light meter. If they make an app.

Cargo pants…LOL… I understand that.

Hi all,
This is Mikaela, the ABC News reporter. I just wanted to say thank you for all your replies and feedback. This is a great forum and I’m going to keep it in mind for future diabetes stories (whether I’m writing the article or I can suggest this site to others).
And thanks again for your insight, Pete! You were a joy to talk to. I was just about to send you the link, but I saw that you found it:)
Best wishes to you all. And thanks again!

Yes! Also the ScottEVest folks do pants with lots of pockets in a traditional and a cargo style. They ain’t cheap.

A smartphone app! That’s a great idea. I carry the phone anyway so that would be most excellent.

It was great talking to you. Thanks for the opportunity.

ooooo… I want. To hell with cheap.

Their stuff makes carrying around all my bits a whole lot easier. Pockets every where. I have a hoodie, a jacket and I just ordered the vest. It’s great for keeping what you need on you. Plus, room for glucose tab tubes!

Anytime that you need someone for an interview I would love to do one…

I wish I had seen this sooner for sure

I’d be willing

When I was first diagnosed, my doctor had me purchase a meter and urine ketone strips, so if I started spilling large amounts of ketones between the time I saw her and the time I had an appointment with an endocrinologist, I could call her and let her know what was going on. I also happen to be one of the very few women out there who is also color blind. I couldn’t tell the difference between most of those colors, even if someone was holding a gun to my head! I just prayed every time that the strip wouldn’t change color. Unfortunately for me, as I recall, those blasted strips generally turned as deep purple as they could. Or whatever color was at or near the high end of the color chart. I never knew for certain, because I couldn’t tell.

So, personally, I wouldn’t go for this color changing bio-lumenescence stuff. I know my color vision isn’t good enough to detect small changes. I can guess, but my guesses aren’t always that accurate, and I’d prefer to be more accurate.

You can contact me if you like. I am newly diagnosed [but had gestational diabetes 18 years ago, and my father was diagnosed about 15 years ago]. I am on oral medication and have a horribly [!] strict diet which I stick to out of FEAR! I am considered thin to be a type 2 diabetic, I can’t tell you how many times people say: “You’re diabetic? But you’re so thin”.
I walk as much as I can [I don’t drive a car], I do Iyengar Yoga every day, I work hard in a fairly physical job… and i test my blood sugar and keep track of what i eat.
I find it a struggle, but I am new to this right now.
I do find an awful lot of conflicting info out there - even in the “registerd diabetic dietician” community.

Hi Tanya a member told me that you have Ischemic Optic Neuropathy and I was diagnosed with the same thing just recently I have it in both eyes and I was wondering if you could explain more about it…I would like to hear your story…You have a wonderful evening…Darlene
