My bleeping insurance is switching my testing supplies AGAIN and is now only covering stuff from Roche. I get to choose between a Nano or an Aviva Plus and was wondering if there was any advantage or annoyance with either of them. Neither seem to do what my One Touch OR Bayer meters did (that nifty communicate with the pump thing) so with that sweet option off the table...
By the way, I thought Accu-Chek was like extinct. I haven't used their stuff since like 1990, and that meter was huge and bulky and overall dinosaur-ish. I'm really quite angry and frustrated, also quite dinosaur-ish. :|
Since you’re on the pump you should be able to get a preauth/override to keep using the strips that communicate with your pump and since Bayer has the coupon card you’d get a discount on the strips that would lower your copay.
That being said if you still want Accuchek I’d go with the Nano it’s newer and would be easier to get a free meter from your endo. Basically the Nano is a smaller updated version of the Aviva.
Cara.Since January 2013, My insurance is also only covering the Accu-check meters. One week ago I requested a pre-auth from my Doc for the Bayer Contour Link meter which is supported by Medtronic MM Minimed, my pump manufacturer. I have a One touch Ultra link, and a One Touch minilink, both of which are quite old. I do not know if they are in production anymore. I may be wrong in this. I do know that MM does not have a relationship with them any more. At any rate, my One touch meters STILL work, so will use the 250 one touch strips I have left until I get the Bayer strips. I will be glad to use the coupon card, as well. I just prefer a linked meter, and do not feel I have to give it up. At least not yet. Can you try to get a pre-authorization for the meter YOU prefer? Like Diana S said, It is worth a try.
Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I'm gonna go for the pre-auth, even though my doctor just did one for me so I could get Humalog instead of Apidra (another stupid insurance thing). I'm so annoyed with all these insurance switches, but right now I have no other choice. Most people would say that I should just be happy that I can get the stuff, but it's just another headache to have to deal with, you know?
Initially, when my mail-order pharmacy made me switch to Roche from OneTouch, I was furious. I was using the UltraSmart and I never thought I'd be okay giving up the tracking functions. Three months later, when I found out that I could go back to my UltraSmart, I couldn't do it.
I get false results maybe once every three or four weeks with the Nano, whereas with OneTouch, I'd get them about once a day. I trust my meter now, and I don't feel the need to re-test whenever I get a high reading (I still double-check lows).
However, since you need the Link meter for your pump, I'd try to get the override. If not, the Nano is amazing.
