it seems like this happened last summer the month school was out that with sleping in and whatever else is different in summer than in school that kennedy's mid morning basal requirements are not near as high, we were at .9 to .95 an hour from 0400 to noon through school to keep her flat, ( by dex) now we seem to be dialing it way back...
is summer less stressful on a kid? is it less cortisol causing morning insulin resistance?
I drop my IU/carb ratio in summer from 12g/IU in winter to 14g/IU in summer. Nothing else changes but the weather gets warmer.
I figure my skin is warmer, my capillary blood flow is stronger and that explains it (for the sort of explanation that doesn't really explain anything.)
My basal doesn't change, but then it's much lower than Kennedy's; I just do 0.5IU/hour consistently except for a wake-up call of 1.5IU/hour. Perhaps most of the time I managing using a low basal with correction boluses.
Yes, summer is definitely less stressful than school. Stress will raise blood sugar. Kids also tend to be much more active in the summer. School forces long periods of inactivity which increases Basel rate requirements. Basel rate during and after play may be as low as 1/3 the previous normal. Very likely there is a play period at lunch time which would tend to lower basel rate.
As an example, my Basel for a normally active day is .55. If I'm at the computer all day I'll be at .80. If I' m out doing house repairs or gardening I shut it down completely.
I have always experienced lower BG with the arrival of summer heat. I didn't find that an increase in activity was necessary to impart the effect. Although increases in activity would certainly reduce insulin needs.
Yes! School is forced inactivity!! Kennedy’s natural state is trampoline swim And dance all summer, I suppose sleeping in late is less stressful than getting up early to the alarm!!
