My husband acquired a stomach bug and shared it with the family (we all had the flu shot) last week. My stomach felt a little off in the AM but my co-worker (two person nuc. med. dept) was coming in late and had an important 1pm appt…so I had to go to work or feel super guilty if I wasnt really ill. Tummy still felt off sans lunch…and not too surprisingly I vomited in the trash just about 1pm. Go figure! Cue irritating supervisor…“do you want to go to employee health”…me…“no, I know what’s wrong with me and I want to go home” Super “dont you want to go to employee health because of…your condition” Grrrr…my blood sugars were good…120 before work…108 mid-morning …115 before lunchtime. I’m sure someone will defend his idiocy…but I didnt have a prob. with diabetes, just the flu and ignorance.
i don’t think it was ignorance at all. one of the first signs of DKA is vomiting. and although you may think you “just had a stomach bug”, with the signs you were showing, it could have been the signs of DKA. so don’t always take someone’s concern for idiocy and ignorance.
I think you’re being a little hard on the guy. After all, he was showing concern for you, he was aware that you’re diabetic and he had no way of knowing if you blood sugars were fine or not.
Glad you got it off your chest, though . . .
If you knew the guy and that my issue was fully explained to him before the mentioned comments…you’d understand. He wasnt asking if I was ok…but was making it a D issue in front of an audience when he was already informed that it wasnt . Usually have to tell him something three times before he gets it…so my distaste for the guy is probably making this worse than it is. You got me
wasnt really showing signs…just laughing/ joking/ acting normal but mentioning the DH and DD were both sick and my stomach was off but all else was ok…and I’d stay as long as I could…until it was clear that I couldnt.
