Anyone else know that you are not supposed to wear our pump against your skin?

Or was it just me? I was (subbing) teaching a few weeks ago and decided to wear my pump in my bra. It was an active class so I was running around a bit. By lunch I was feeling like my blood sugar was high I took my blood test and I was 587. I attempted to quick bolus and the buttons didnt work, I called minimed and they had me try a few things, but the screen froze. They said they would send me a new one the next day and to just use injections (sucked for me because I had nothing on me for the next couple hours). The representative said that they are finding that the pump malfunctions when it is worn against the skin. I am a bit bummed, because I have been concealing my pump (in certain situations) for a long time and this is the first time it has EVER happened to me. The rest of the day was pretty painful trying to corral 3rd graders with super high blood sugars is not a goodtime. Has this happened to anyone else? Or do I just sweat like a pig on a spit…

Did they tell you why it is malfunctioning? Gets to hot? Wet from sweat? Just curious.

Really? Hmm. I have always worn my pump on my bra. I have had pump failures in the past (2x) but there were not the same as yours. Interesting. Honestly, although I hope this is not actually, I doubt this will change anything for me. I have tried many places and my bra works the best. Each time it broke the company replaced it within about 15 hours. I just keep needles on hand. Or maybe next time I will check out the pod more seriously.

I have never heard this. That being said I don’t like having my pump directly against my skin when I have it in my bra. I put it in a baby sock and have never had any problems with Minimed or more recently Animas Ping.

News to me too …I don’t wear my pump in my bra …don’t always wear one  …my waistband works for me …pumping since 2001 ( MM ) …I always carry in my BG meter pack an insulin needle and the vial of Apidra , just in case .

Mine seemed to be getting wierd when I was running. I usually put it on my belt but I had a couple of 10-15 degree runs lately and after a few miles, the pump buttons worked but were slow and I figured that wasn’t too good so I flipped it around, tucking it inside my waistband and it worked ok? I didn’t have any trouble with it. Mine is almost 3 years old though so I figure any unexplained BG fluctuation means it is going to blow up.

They told me that they are finding out that heat and moisture are making the buttons malfunction. My screen was malfunctioning as well id est… freezing.

Yeah my bra is one of my favorite places to place the pump. I dont always wear it there, but some fashion looks better if I do. The representative told me that they are discovering that heat and moisture are making the buttons malfunction. They replaced it within 18 hours.

Lucky you! I would probably be arrested and stoned to death if I went with out one. I will NEVER forget to carry a vial of humalog with me after that. I was so dehydrated by the end of the day my muscles were cramping.

The representative mentioned a baby sock, but she said heat can effect it to so I am a little bit scared.

I think I left mine against my skin for too long. I was really anxious after I discovered what happened. I would call and tell them if your buttons act weird again, they will replace it with a new one so you won’t have to worry about pump explosions… for awhile atleast.

ahh, but I want an improved one(Revel?) Apparently there’s some advantage if I wait until April, when the warranty expires? I had better get ahold of the MiniMedSalesNurse soon though, I don’t want to screw it up!

I once tried wearing my pump in my bra, and one of the other teachers told me it looked like I had 3 breasts! I was so embarrassed! I would like to wear it in my bra sometimes, but have not figured out how to do it without it showing. Lesson, please!

Oooohhh!!! Nice. I want one too! Hmm… Ive had mine for three years now as well, but my warranty doesnt expire until November. I am going to try the CGM too. You will have to keep me updated on the Revel.

Ah! You should not be embarassed… I refer to my infusion set as my “seksi tube” I wear the face of the pump against my skin between my breast. Make sure your the middle connector of your bra is a good size and already lies flat against your skin. If the material connecting the cups is too thin your pump will flop forward creating the dreaded “third breast”

Well, I have big breasts that push together anyway – no room between them for a pump. The top of the pump sticks up. I just may be out of luck! :frowning: I do have a leg thing, which works OK for long dresses, but not for short ones. I need to get clothes with pockets – I do have one dress in which I cut a small hole in the pocket for the tubing to go through, and it works pretty well.

I just started wearing mine in my bra. and know after reading this I am worried! See I am a medic and so the whole three boob thing does not bother me when it comes down to keeping it “out of site out of mind” so to speak. I had so many issues with pts accidently ripping sites out when they or the stretcher would get tangled on the tubing and found the bra placement to be perfect. using the clip I clip it to the center with the screen and buttons facing outward not up against the skin so the case is protecting it so to speck from touching the skin. Will this keep it safe doing it that way or is it better to find another location? I don’t have time in my life for pump failure.

My breasts are pretty large, but I just shove it in between. If you are going out push-up bras are pretty wonderful because of the stiff connecting material in the middle. It may help you have a little more room between your breast for your pump to fit comfortably when you are wearing a shorter dress.

I called the MM help line the other day for a problem ( cannot download the pump /CareLink ; pump 522 is well out of warranty ) I mentioned to the chap , that I was planning to order a travel loaner pump ...we are off to Maui in January . He said a good idea , because with the humid , warm weather sometimes buttons may stick ...your discussion and comments has made it clearer for me ...thanks .

PS MM is working with our Insurance to get a replacement pump , in Canada the Veo model .

Yeah pump failure sucks pretty badly. I wear mine in my bra for protection as well (when interning with violent offenders.) I personally feel safer with it in my bra. You place it with the buttons facing outwards. I was wearing mine with the face against my skin (my obvious mistake) I am pretty sure it was my sweat and the buttons direct prolonged contact with my skin that caused a malfunction. The minimed nurse suggested that I wear the pump in a baby sock, she said it would protect it from moisture Another blogger on her also mentioned the baby sock.I am thinking that would be the best bet. I think you will be fine, keep it faced outwards and try a baby sock for extra protection if you are nervous.
