The fine folks at Integrated Diabetes Services are hosting a contest for the best carb counter. Give it a shot (no pun intended)! 3 winners get a prize...
Two question 13's, no question 14 LOL
Yes I noticed that too, call the second one 14 I guess.
It was very difficult deciding how much there was on a plate because you cant really see how piled up the pasta is for example. the size of the plates was a little hard to tell too.
Even with the hands and things in there to clue us in.
I notice that I count carbs differently than most. I count how much insulin a portion of food would be for me instead of counting the actual carb content because it includes my ratio as well. Makes me have to think a bit more
For example that big slab of pizza would take me 4 units of insulin which is huge, since 4 units is what I take for an average entire meal. My ratio is 1 unit per 20 carbs.
We should post out results when they come.
With not being able to use a food scale, tons of guesswork.

took the quiz....but it wont let me log in.
Yikes! Seriously?? There are foods there I wouldn't touch with a functioning pancreas, let alone as a diabetic. The deep-fried/breaded salmon looks disgusting. Did they get their food photos from a prison cafeteria?
What is the "prize"?? And yuck, I'm with Christopher on the food photo comment - I probly won't eat anything for dinner tonight. The quizz is lacking in a lot more than photography and numbering ability.
I eat less than 30g of carb a day. I am great at counting small amounts, but there's nothing in the foods shown that I would even think to eat.
Really? Your diet is so restricted you won't eat a cup of mixed vegetables with diet coke? Or even a mixed green salad with diet coke? What do you eat?
I agree, it would be nice to at least know how big the plate they are using is. But I think that's the point - to learn to handle eating out in the real world. Useful, for example, when eating at a non-chain restaurant (or at a friend's house) where there is no cheat sheet available with the nutrition info printed out.
Also, the first photo is SWORDFISH, not salmon.
looked like salmon!!
It not only looks like salmon (but what do I know, I'm a vegetarian!) but it SAYS "salmon and pasta".
Those people sure love their diet soda! I would eat some of the things in the pictures such as mixed salad,(my idea of it, not theirs) apples, pears and bananas.I don't drink diet soda because I don't like it. In general there were so many things in the questionnaire that are both individual preferences and individual response to carbs. For example, for many Type 1's glycemic index and white vs brown don't make a difference in blood sugar response. We all have some foods that are "more than the sum of the parts" like for me rice and cereal that just affect us badly. No right answers for everyone. As for visually counting carbs: I would need to know what was in some things (as someone said what kind of salad dressing for example). I usually eat at home where everything has been measured and accounted for. If I go out I usually eat something similar to other times or look it up before I go. I also have another factor when counting carbs called the "is it worth it?" factor. For example I switched to almond milk because couldn't see "spending" 5 carbs on milk for my capp and eggs in the morning. If I'm going to eat pizza it will be artisan pizza (where I live now I have to make it myself). Ditto bread, I'd rather count 25 carbs for good sour crunchy seedy bread than 15 for packaged white bread. Etc YMMV. My conclusion? Most of us have a system - yours may be very different than mine, perhaps entailing smart phones at the table - and are pretty darn good at it. I say we are all winners!
In my opinion that is a survey on "guestimating" carbs, not accurately counting them. I only guestimate if I have no other choice.
Well the quizz said - "Approximately how many grams of total carbohydrate are in the pictured portions?" - so it allowed approximating at least. The effort in suggesting the size of the serving was pretty good, it was just the food itself was a huge turn off. That salmon is nothing like any salmon I've ever seen served (who deep fries salmon??), and the rice was even worse!
I hope the prize is not a gift certificate to the restaurant - LOL!!
Submitted and awaiting a reply :)
I don't see too much of a problem with these foods. Other than the regular syrup and the absurd amount pasta, I would eat everything shown. I guess this is one of those times my 200 carb/day college junk diet is paying off!
Hey everyone who did this, check your emails. I just got a reply.
"Hi Tim,
Nice job on the carb quiz that you took earlier in May!
Your total score was 65 out of 100 total points. While you aren't one of
the 3 Kings of Carb counting (meaning, Sorry, you didn't win a prize!),
you did give a valiant effort!"
Then it goes on to tell you how well you did in each section. as well as give you some contact info if you have anymore questions.
I'm just curious, how did everyone else fare on this quiz?
