Back home

Well I am back from my business trip. I actually enjoyed it a lot! Which is surprising because I often find travel kind of stressful ... It was nice to meet colleagues and clients at another office. The city I stayed in was tiny (about 70,000 people) so I am glad to be home in my city of almost 2.5 million people. Where I stayed seemed sooooo quiet and there were hardly any people or cars around.

I will be going back to this place sometime in the not too distant future. I found out there is a public pool a few blocks from the hotel, so next time I will definitely be bringing my swim suit to do some lane swimming. I LOVE swimming; the only form of exercise I don't have to sort of force myself to do. I did bring some workout clothes and shoes with me this time but had no time to exercise, and it was too hot to go for a walk on the streets even if I had.

I got a small fridge in my hotel room but had no time to go grocery shopping ... The nearest grocery store was about 10 blocks from the hotel and I didn't feel like walking that much in the evening. Next time I will try and bring food with me. This time I brought only carry-on luggage which I really liked. I am not sure if I can bring a ton of food in carry-on (due to room), but I will try and plan ahead more next time.

When I ate out I tried to stick to food that was either obviously low carb (like salads) or that I had nutritional information for. I tried to stick to < 30g per meal which wasn't too hard. The first day there I used up my entire lunch hour running around looking for something low carb. All I could find was sushi, sandwiches, doughnuts, etc. Finally I ended up in Tim Hortons where I explained my plight (diabetic looking for something low carb) and they made me a salad even though they don't usually sell anything like that. It was so nice of them and it wasn't a half bad salad, either.

My blood sugar had the usual highs and lows, but overall was pretty good except for the last day. The last day I had eggs and bacon and sausage and the only carbs I had were two pieces of toast with jam and two strawberries, about 40g because I decided I would splurge ... Well, at home I eat the Weight Watchers bread which is thin, so I'm only ever eating "one piece" of normal bread at a time (each piece has 9g carbs so two pieces equal 16g). So anyway, I had been 7.5 that morning, but two hours after that breakfast I was 20.5! I did two corrections over the next few hours but at lunch I was still 13.9, so I barely ate anything for lunch. I really hate when I get stuck so high like that for hours, ugh! I actually forgot to bring any extra insulin so it's a good thing I came down eventually, otherwise I'd have had to go find a pharmacy.

All in all it was a great trip. Also, my probationary period at work is coming to and end, which means health benefits kick in soon. I am not holding my breath, but I am going to see if they cover CGM systems. I am not even sure what is in Canada as far as they go, but it is something I think would help me a LOT if I could get one.

hi jen glad you had a good trip! breakfast out can be brutal afew vacations back jacob had sausage eggs... for breakfast and his bs was over 400 next check the attack of the late effect fat and protein, we watch this now and extend most of the meal an hour out! of course this was a special treat not an every day thing but we were surprised as well. good luck with everything! amy

Well done Jen! Glad it worked out so well, and that you enjoyed it.

Any airline I've flown lets me bring an extra carry-on for medical supplies. Really helps when your small suitcase is already packed, it would be worth checking into for your next trip.

Yes, well done Jen. Glad to hear the trip went so well.
