Bears, bikes and bug bites - Day 1.5

It’s been a while since I spent an entire, very long, day traveling. I know heaps of diabetics that do it, and do it well. My respect and admiration of those folks is renewed. I did pretty dang good with BG and insulin. But as I lay in my hotel room bed a few minutes ago, the skies getting light at 3:30 AM, I realize I spaced out taking all my oral meds last night.

We picked up my bike after an un eventful flight from Salt Lake City. The kids at the shop were cool, but maybe a bit clueless about roads and conditions. Best part of that stop was seeing the snow bikes…pic later.

The REI store was screaming busy…lines at the checkout 4 people deep. A group ahead of us had what appeared to be a months worth of backpacking supplies for 4, and ringing out speaking…some Slavic language appeared to be challenging. We checked out with 36 gels, 6 recovery drink packs, 6 electrolyte drink packs, and 2 bear spray canisters.

My wife and I now sit gazing out the window on a scene that these kids from the desert will remember forever. Snowy mountains sized like big brothers to our familiars in Colorado, work barges slowly plying their way out into the waterways, pink clouds splashed across blue skies.

Today we go on a day trip in Princce William Sound. But for now, where do you find coffee and breakfast at 4:00 AM?

Does a bear spray cannister work? I would think I'd want a .45 caliber "bear sprayer" if I were riding up there!

I sure hope bear spray works! We dropped $90 for two on the advice of a local tudiabetes guy (Dave? Can’t find your post to check name right now) from Homer AK. Says works on bears, moose and people. My plan is to buy it keep it with me while riding, and never ever need to use it!
