Best Anxiety Meds?

I’ve taken xanax, clonopin, and valium for anxiety over the years. I no longer feel symptoms of hypoglycemia so I have to check my BG very often, the catch is that I can’t sleep long because I may crash and I can’t take SSRI’s because they affect my BG. Any suggestions?

Hi Jason,I also suffer from anxiety attacks and I am type 1.I have to check my BG 10-12x a day and i contasntly worry about lows, especially when I am alone.its no fun! I have been on celexa which helps but i have been trying to look for more “natural” ways. There are supplements…one being L-theanine which I like (check with your doc first) and I do yoga which helps alot! Hope some of this helps

Thanks Angela, the supplements help but the exercise/yoga is better. I just have to remember to flood my hypothalamus with oxygen, take deep breaths, and let the tools do the work. Otherwise I am just a freak!

Did Xanax, Clonopin and Valium not work for you? I don’t know what else there is other than something longer lasting like Buspar. I personally wouldn’t reccomend Buspar, It made me more anxious feeling and shaky.
I use Xanax, as needed during the day and one or 2 at night to help sleep. I had anxiety long before I became diabetic (T1, a year ago) and have been thru just about every med out there. I stick with xanax because I also have chronic pancreatitis, which casues lots of pain and xanax helps the pain a little or at least lets me relax more thru it.

I have never actually taken anything for my anxiety. I’m on Pristiq for depression, and i think i try to stick with homeopathic remedies for anxiety. In my case, i get an upset stomach with anxiety. If i ever feel a little weird tummy-ness, i eat a little ginger chew- Ginger is awesome for that. Otherwise, i use a Peppermint oil when i feel anxious or nauseous. It’s an essential oil and all i do is sniff it- either from the bottle, or by putting a couple drops on a tissue. Although i wouldn’t be surprised if having a one of those star peppermint candies had the same effect. Either way, i find the ginger and the peppermint really work for me.

I get the ginger chews at Trader Joe’s ( I heart Joe) and i got the Peppermint Essential oil from Whole Foods. The oil should last a good loooooooooooong time- because you should only be using a couple drops at a time. And the scent lasts for a while.

Hope this helps!!

I am type 1 and finding the anxiety thing getting worse. For years I have called it the “feeling of impending doom” !! I use by accident, pepermint and ginger in my diet. What eles is there outside of the Pharma world ??
