Big Blue Test 2013 has begun!

what is big blue test?

Since 2010, over 40,000 people helped themselves while helping more than 10,000 others. Most participants in the Big Blue Test experience an average blood sugar drop of 20% and by every Big Blue Test result a donation is made by the program sponsor to help others around the world with diabetes in need.

The Big Blue Test is a program of the Diabetes Hands Foundation that encourages people with diabetes to test their blood sugar, exercise for 14-20 minutes, test again and share their experience on BigBlueTest.org. For every test, people with diabetes in need receive life-saving supplies through Big Blue Test grants that are awarded to humanitarian diabetes charities in the US and around the world, made possible thanks to the program sponsor.

In 2013, the Big Blue Test grants will benefit two US-based initiatives (each will receive US$2,500) and an additional US$5,000 will support projects in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

This year, we’re seeking to reach 20,000 Big Blue Test entries, which will translate into a donation that will help save lives.

I did my first Big Blue Test of the year this morning!!! 20 minutes on a treadmill, 35 weight training. BG went from 154 to 95 with no extra insulin :)

My first one (yesterday) brought me down from 220 to 180 on almost minutes of brisk walking!

Ok, the tally is now at 93. I am challenging members to get us to 200 by the end of the day. Remember, your non-d friends and family can participate too, without entering any glucose readings.

I've recently been doing anaerobic exercise for my morning workouts, which technically should not drop blood sugar. Apparently I'm doing something wrong, though...

2 more BBTs last night at the dance studio, and another this morning at the gym! Anyone want to do a friendly competition with me? I bet I can log the MOST BBTs.....

The tally is at 109. Are we getting to 200 today?

Just logged my second Big Blue Test for this year. Completed the Abs workout from SweatBetes and followed it up with time on the stationary bike. My BG dropped 24 points to 136. You can read about my workout in the Wednesday Workout forum.

I tried to enter 1 of the 823 big blue tests I have in an excel spreadsheet on my computer. But the thing errored out and did not count it. Not sure if it is a problem with my computer ? Or something was just not right.

You're on Emily - but I did start storing them November of last year.

I did mine today - 22 min walk, went from 146 to 123 and saw some beautiful fall color

I've gotten a couple in, unless the ones that I tried to input repeatedly while I was swearing at the app went in, in which case there might be a dozen or so of the 111-97 one. I'm not working out as much as I was a couple of weeks ago as I'm laying off T25 w/ the 1/2 marathon approaching and 10 mile runs on the weekends. I miss Shaun T in the AM but his voice is still in my head...

Just unicycled for 45 minutes. started @ 122 and finished @ 121. No bolus for breakfast and a 50% basal reduction. Wish I could have this kind of control during excercise all the time.

I started out super high this morning (380) and after a 30-minute walk (and some insulin) got down to 178. Go BBT!!

I did my first big blue test this morning. Starting blood sugar was 193 did a brisk walk and without any extra insulin my blood sugar dropped to 131.

Just completed my first BBT. Was 8.0, did 15 minutes on the treadmill and am now 7.1. Not bad! Many more to go and lots of days to do it. :) Tally: 508.

I would like to try this, can we just do this randomly and enter it later on, and do we have to do it every day? And if we also take insulin & water to lower ourselves as well as the exercise is that ok? For instance, I took a correction & water to lower a spike this afternoon from stress and my basal running out, then I had to drive for a while but I didn't do the exercise till an hour or so later(shopping).

Hi meee.

Yes, you can log as many or as few exercise sessions as you like. Go to www.BigBlueTest.org to see the entry form in the right-hand column. It asks if you take insulin, but not about drinking water.

If you post your BG readings those need to be right before and right after the exercise so that you can see the effect.

Thanks for asking.

I broke my 10 miler this AM into 3, 2x 30 and 1x 20-29! The results were consistent although (dropping...) but the surrounding numbers haave been a bit nightmarish as I had a deep-dish hangover at 250 this AM and cooked it the last mile (7;24, which is out of my head for me on a 10 miler...) and post run adrenaline flew up to 160something but now coming back to normal.

Between the weather, flu and stomach yuck I haven't run in 3 weeks. I'm no where near as athletic as AR but managed a nice 3 miler at 33 minutes. Since I'm a bit out of shape it caused my BG to go up 26 points but that often happens if I push myself.

As far as the forum is concerned, or doctors, or anyone else, "athletic" needs to be "on" or "off" and the times, speeds, activities, etc. don't really matter so you we are both exactly as "athletic" as anybody else who can move!
