I always bolus for coffee, but then I usually put creamer and faux sugar in it. Even a tiny bit of creamer can bring my blood sugar up, as can some kind of artificial sweetners! If the little coffee packets have any kind of flavor to them, you might need to bolus. Have you tried emailing the company for nutritional information?
Hello Linda,
Black, unsweetened coffee has 0 calories (and therefore, zero carbs etc.) However, I think caffeine does have some effect, on me anyway, in raising blood sugar (even if I drink the coffee black with a packet of Splenda). I usually drink the coffee with breakfast and bolus a small amount extra to cover the caffeine. This might take some experimentation so keep a few glucose tabs handy until you sort it out 100%.
Good Luck!
When I drink my morning cup of coffee I use whole milk and about 1 level tsp of sugar and I bolus 25 grams to cover the spike from the caffeine, sugar and milk. As Linda said coffee by itself does not contain carbs but the caffeine will give you a spike on its own.

I rise both from the dawn effect as well as black, unsweetened coffee. I bolus a unit for the coffee and I"m good to go. I could adjsut the basal, but there are some mornings when i just don’t get the coffee. It’s easy enough to give that one unit. that’s the beauty of a pump. I wouldn’t have done that with MDIs.
Hi Lauren,
I am waiting for a message from Keurig. I use whole milk and 1 packet of splenda. I only drink 2 very small
cups of coffee. I’m up each morning at 6am and do not eat breakfast tii 8am. I guess I’ll just bolus an extra unit
just to be safe.
Like I told Lauren, i get up at 6am but don’t eat right away. I guess I’ll try 1 unit of Novalog and see if that works.
I woke up with DP this morning so I didn’t get off to a good start.
I use whole milk and 1 packet of spenda. I was bolusing 1 unit each of Novalog to cover 2 small cups of
Maxwell House. Guess I’ll be going through trial and error.
I have experienced DP a few mornings this week. I guess I’ll bolus the same that I did with Maxwell House.
I drink 2 small cups with whole milk and 1 packet of splenda. I guess I’ll bolus for 2 Novalog units and see
what happens.I’m not ready for the pump yet; I’ve only be at this since January 08. Still have a lot to learn.
How many units of insulin do you usually take with breakfast? How many carbs do you usually eat?
This would be important info before deciding how much of a bolus to give!
I don’t generally take a bolus with coffee, but I don’t drink it very often… I think that the caffeine makes me spike too though!
I am going to start a test tomorrow and drink decaf ( in the afternoon ) ONLY for the next week …thanks for bringing up the subject Linda …my BG higher than I like , when I have my afternoon coffee today …and I love it STRONG and it really was today …I recall reading , that caffeine may effect people with type 2 diabetes …maybe type 1 as well ??
Bolusing for coffee you can use a random number generator. Sometimes it will spike my BG and keep it up for hours even with a lot of insulin and sometimes very little effect. Go figure?
