Written by Jean Roemer, writer of pediatric diabetes educational materials at www.LearningDiabetes.com and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, this guide is fantastic! The first thing that stood out to me about it was the incredible compassion with which it was written. The book is a clear and practical guide to the nuts-and-bolts of diabetes as it presents in children, but it is also a guide for parents on how to stay mentally healthy and sane while navigating the tremendous responsibility of raising children with diabetes. Roemer acknowledges the fears, regrets, potential sources of guilt and self-blame that parents may feel when a child is diagnosed with diabetes, and offers kind and gentle encouragement to let go of those destructive feelings and focus instead on preparing that child for the healthiest and happiest life possible.
The information presented in this book is well-organized and clearly articulated, making no assumptions about the reader's prior knowledge of the topic. I think it's well-suited for use as an informational reference, a source of hope and comfort, and a parenting guide.
I read from the perspective of someone who, long ago, was a child with diabetes, and this book gets 2 enthusiastic thumbs up from me.
