Not right now. If you install control-iq, then basal-iq goes away. There’s nothing about basal-iq in the manual. (Which you can find under documentation on their website). As of right now, control-iq is not backwards compatible, either. I hear it’s something they’re working on, though
Here’s a little recent history for the technical developments that enabled Control-IQ to be released by Tandem.
The University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Center for Diabetes Technology incubated an algorithm to control blood glucose in a closed-loop system using an insulin pump and CGM. This initial program was further developed in a spin-off company named Type Zero Technologies. Type Zero called this emerging algorithm inControl.
Tandem licensed software in 2016 from Type Zero to provide the algorithm for a closed loop system it was developing that was eventually named Control-IQ.
In August of 2018, Dexcom bought Type Zero and its promising closed-loop program.
Tandem announced in late December 2019 that it would release its Control-IQ software to its customers starting in January 2020. This software when combined with the Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump and a Dexcom G6 CGM will comprise a system that will automatically dose insulin in response to rising glucose and withhold insulin when glucose is trending too low. This is a hybrid closed-loop system in that the user usually announces meals.
Unfortunately since Dexcom bought Type Zero they have said absolutely nothing about the product. Is Dexcom doing anything to improve or enhance the current algorithm?
I listened to Stacey Sims Diabetes Connection podcast about the FDA finally approving the Tandem Control IQ! It is a great listen! And I already have asked my doctor to write the prescription! Emails will be coming out to those still in warranty very soon. I am hoping by the middle to end of February, I might be up and running. Just spending this month making sure my basal/ carbs are as good as I can get them, so it will be a very easy switch over! Can’t wait to no longer hear in alarms in the middle of the night for high blood sugars, because I don’t hear them anymore for lows!
I was told by a Tandem employee that it will be either tomorrow or Monday for the first emails. But that it roll out in phases.
Seems like it should be trivial. Just turn off high bg control, keep the low control and allow TBR. Then we have Basal-IQ2 – not just a predictive cut off, but also a predictive reduction. In settings, have two on/off switches, one for Basal-IQ and one for Control-IQ. Turning one on, turns off the other. You can turn them both off, but can’t turn them both on. Tandem, PM me and I can help you with the code.
Then there was this bit of good news back in August:
There is no option to turn off the upper half of the algorithm. Just like currently, there is simply an on/off switch for Control-IQ in the settings, and then nothing at all for Basal-IQ. It disappears entirely with the upgrade.
I have a feeling this has more to do with the FDA approval process, rather than coding ability. With medical devices, every little change requires starting the process over… Which takes time. So while they have said they’re working on a way to revert back to Basal-IQ, I doubt we’ll see it for a long time to come, if ever at all. Technology is advancing fast enough that it may never be beneficial for them to invest in the older technology, but instead focus on improving control-iq.
I wonder if they didn’t have it in an earlier design and the FDA bulked. Wanting to turn off the upper half seems like something that would come up early…
Recieved this today from Tandem.
Join us Wednesday, January 15 at [4 PM](calendar:T1:4 PM) EST/ [1 PM](calendar:T1:1 PM) PST for a live presentation featuring Danielle Karsten, Director of Product Marketing at Tandem Diabetes Care. Danielle will be giving an overview of Control-IQ™ technology, as well as outlining the process of getting it for both new customers and current t:slim X2™ insulin pump users.
